“It just works”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

I've stayed in the Davenport a few times now without writing a review. As you can guess from the fact I keep coming back I like it. I don't have to queue to check in which might seem like a small thing but it always irritates me if I do. The breakfast is buffet style with a good range of hot and cold. I find the rooms comfortable and sleep like a log. In summer the air conditioning is sensitive to my needs. The location is central. The staff are helpful. In short, as my title says, it works for me.

Room Tip: In Summer the Ginger Man can be noisy with drinkers outside and so a quiter time is had at the back.

The hotel is very neat, with comfortable beds and beautiful rooms, good breakfast and very fast internet connection. Objection to the traditional tap where you can not wash your hands or teeth in cold or hot water, and fixed shower, which really is not practical

Stayed here for three nights with my husband. Check in was long and only one girl on reception. We arrived early in the morning and we were grateful that our room was made up and ready. The room was spacious and the bathroom was clean with toiletries. There are no slippers or bathrobes. They do have coffee and tea in the room but the selection is poor. I had to phone down for herbal tea and if it was'nt for my husband going to the bar and getting it i would still b waiting. He was told they do not supply herbel teas in the rooms and that they were busy and could not bring it to my room. Breakfast was okay. Good selection of fruit salad, pastries, scones, breads cereal. They also serve buffet hot breakfast, bacon, sausage, tomatoe, black pudding, mushrooms.and eggs. They are very slow at filling things up. had to wait for hot plates to be refilled. They did not notice when orange juice ran out. The staff at breakfast all look very stressed and unhappy and over the course of the two days we did not see one of the breakfast staff smile. Got the feeling things were just manic in the kitchen on both mormings. It was not overly busy and i dread to think what it would be like on a busy morning. This hotel lacks atmosphere and the staff are not that friendly. They also do not supply bottled water in your room. I was told when i phoned from my room to ask for bottled water that the water in the room is drinkable. Well would you really drink water from the bathroom. I don't think so. This hotel is not a four star and needs to clean up its act. Supply the following, slippers, bathrobes, bottled water ,herb tea and hot choc in your rooms. Have been to better 3 star hotels.

Dear EastLothianCupcake

Thank you for taking the time to write your recent review of the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel. I was disappointed to read that we fell short of our usual high standards in some areas of service, I will be reviewing these issues with the relevant department heads but please accept my sincere apologies for the performance gaps you experienced in this regard. We are broadly in line with our local competition in relation to our complimentary bedroom offerings, but we do review these levels regularly and will be revisiting this point at our next management meeting. I do hope you choose to return to the hotel in the future and would ask you to contact me directly to make the arrangements and I will personally insure a top class experience.

Yours sincerely,

The facade of the building is much more impressive than the interior. Our room was a decent size, it was clean and nicely decorated. The bar is a bit old fashioned, all tartan capets and not much atmosphere. We didn't eat here so I can't comment. The location was good, across from the Gingerman pub and just beside Sweny's chemist where Leopold Bloom bought his lemon soap. The back entrance to the national gallery is a stone's throw away so it's a good base for seeing the sights. The staff were helpful and friendly.

We spent four nights here on our first visit to Dublin. The hotel is in a monumental old building and decorated in comfortable, old-fashioned clubby style. It is only a couple of minutes walk from Trinity College and from the National Gallery, National Museum, etc, and just around the corner from Merrion Square. Our room was on the small side and very hot no matter how we set the air conditioning, so we had to sleep with the window open. The bed was quite comfortable but the pillows were thin and lumpy. The bathroom was good, with a powerful shower and very very hot water. Shampoo, soap, hand lotion and bath gel were provided but no other amenities, and no robe or slippers. There was a safe in the room and an ironing board and old-fashioned suit press. The room was made up every day while we were at breakfast and was quite clean. Breakfast was served in the formal dining room and was the typical "big Irish breakfast" buffet, with scrambled eggs, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes in the hot selection and fruit salad, cereal, cold cuts, cheese, pastries, scones and breads in the cold selection. The food quality was ok. At other times of day, the restaurant is closed but a range of tapas and main courses is served in the bar, which is a comfortable club style place. We had the impression that the hotel is very understaffed, although the service was generally good. We were not greeted or even acknowledged when we arrived and had to wait for perhaps five or six minutes at check in because the person on reception was helping in the bar, and there was difficulty in finding someone to help get our heavy suitcases up to our room. The price was reasonable, however, and overall we were comfortable so we'd probably stay here again. The biggest negative was that the door to our room had no bolt or chain or deadlock from inside, so that several times the chambermaid simply entered (without knocking) while we were in the room. When we put out the "do not disturb" sign this stopped happening, but it left us with the impression that the rooms are not secure and could be entered by intruders, especially as the hotel does not have a doorman or concierge to keep an eye on people coming and going.

Dear Ozday

Thank you for taking the time to review the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel. I would also like to thank you for the all positive comments contained within your review. I was disappointed to hear that you experienced some levels of shortages in our staff levels which I assure you is far from the norm and something I will be reviewing at our team meetings. All of our doors possess a VingCard dead lock system which is activated by turning the latch below the door handle. I can assure that our security record is quite impeccable and a number of security features exist to ensure the safety of our guests which we value as paramount. I do hope you return to Dublin in the near future and choose to stay with us here again.

Kind regards

A great Hotel in a fantastic location, with efficient and friendly staff. It's located in the shell of Merrion Hall just off Merrion Square the original building designed by Alfred G Jones in 1863, was gutted by an "accidental" fire in 1990 which made the listed building shell available for commercial use....nuff said!!.

Anyways.....it's a great central spot for business conferences and meetings but it's the details that let you down......I know it seems pedantic but for goodness sake why do even the best Hotels keep serving tea in the coffee dispenser/flask and vice versa, tastes totally awful.........there you go, if that's all I can complain about it can't be too bad !!

Thank you for taking the time to review the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel. Thank you also for the insight full take on the buildings history and all your positive comments. It is a difficult balance to provide bean to cup coffee taste in a format which can deliver 200 cups of coffee In a 10 minute period which some of our events demand. I will talk to our coffee supplier to try to find some improvements in our system.

Breakfast was excellent with many choices including fresh fruit salad, local breads and a good cheeseboard. Staff were friendly and helpful especially Kathi.
