Owner description: This bleak old jail was notorious in the 19th century for its harsh treatment of prisoners.

Despite taking a little organisation to travel here, it is a must see in Dublin. It is an integral part of Irish History and particularly about relations with England/Irish experiences under English rule. I have been here on several occasions with friends and family and despite this it never disappoints. Always intriguing and thought provoking, the tours are excellent and give you a real sense of the History of the building and terrible conditions/treatment prisoners suffered. It suits those with a knowledge of Irish history and those without alike. Definitely make time for this whilst in Dublin.

We ran across Dublin so we could make the last tour after leaving the Guinness Factory. The rush paid off as this was way more interesting than the factory. We were very glad that we stopped here early in our trip to Ireland because as foreigners we did not know much about Ireland's independence. This tour helped put the rest of our trip into context about the modern Irish history.

Our tour guide Michael was fairly new to the Gaol but was very knowledgeable and excited to share with us. After the tour we met him outside at a crosswalk and asked him where we should eat and he ended up spending another 20 minutes chatting with us and giving us great advice about what to see for the rest of our trip in the city and across Ireland.

Having been told about this place by a local the day before, we were intrigued as to see what it was about. We got there about midday and a tour was going off 5 minutes later. The tour guide Micheal was very knowledgable and friendly and answered any questions. You learn so much about the history of Ireland and the fascinating past of the gaol. €6 for adults is incredibly cheap for what's on offer. No faults with this tour. Perfect. Do not miss it!!
