“Do not pass Go but go directly to jail”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We were lucky that there were not a huge amount of people on the tour of this facility. The tour guide was excellent and very informable. The conditions that the prisoners indured were clearly shown and described. If anyone wants an eyeopening history of the 19th and 20th century should go here.

Very interesting with a very well done tour. Be sure to arrive early in the morning to avoid a long line. If there is time before your tour, spend it in the museum. There is plenty of interest there to keep you occupied for an hour or so. Get the Ireland Pass, it is included (free!) with your pass.

“Interesting story loaded with Irish History”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

I loved that we were able to use our Irish Heritage Passes and visit the jail for free. Our tour had an excellent guide who told us the stories of the jail and was able to answer all questions, she really knew her subject. I especially liked that we were allowed to take as many photos as we wished inside the jail.

“low admission fee, take the HOHO”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

since this is further from the city center, I used the HOHO (red one) and it drops off right in front. Go early to avoid long lines. The tours are in groups/narrated and the narrator of my tour was an archeologist. Very interesting and full of knowledge about the Gaol. Somber experience, very low admission price and so well worth it. The museum attached can be toured at leisure either before/after the guided tour and is full of all sorts of artifacts.

“Go to this jail, now!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We waited in line about 40 minutes to get in the jail, which wasn't too bad. The displays before the actual tour starts are very informative. There's an unbelievable letter written by a young 18 year old man, sentenced to death, to his mother which set the tone for me. Simply beautiful. His letter alone made my trip to Ireland a memorable one. Ireland's a great little country. Anyway, back to the jail. The tour guide was very passionate about the history of this jail and the people who lived and died there. He argued that the origins of the Republic of Ireland started in this jail. Certainly, it was a lot to take in a 90 minute tour. The jail is very well preserved. Interesting side note, several movies have been filmed there, including 'In the name of the father'. Of course we saw it when we returned home. Daniel Day Lewis is the man!
