Owner description: This bleak old jail was notorious in the 19th century for its harsh treatment of prisoners.

We were lucky enough to get a great recommendation about Kilmainham Gaol from our taxi driver who picked us up at the airport. We were even luckier to go on a day when admission was free! This was a very interesting and educational tour. There is a museum inside with interactive exhibits and the tour guides were very well informed. The hour long tour of Kilmainham also gives you a nice history of the road to freedom for the Irish. A must stop for anyone visiting Dublin.

This jail has a varied history, starting out more as a debtors prison and ending up with political prisoners crucial to History of Irish independence. As are all jails I've visited, they are dark and creepy, cramped and built of cold stone. Many died or were executed here, children prisoners whipped. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and the museum had a lot of artifacts. Since it is a dark subject, maybe better to hit this stop early in the day and choose more cheerful stops for later.

This tour was the only historical tour we took on our brief time in Dublin, and it was worth it. The history of the Irish comes to life in this jail, and we enjoyed hearing it told by a passionate tour guide.

We almost did not get off our sight seeing bus (red hop on-hop off) and we would of missed one of the best tours we have had. The history that our tour guide explained to us was remarkable. We really had no idea what we were about to see and learn but after the tour we were so glad we made the stop. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Answered any questions we had. Thank you for a fabulous tour. A must see if staying in Dublin or close too.
