Owner description: The Abbey Theatre's founders W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory had the vision to 'bring upon the stage the deeper thoughts and emotions of Ireland'. Our ambitious artistic programme of classic Irish drama and new Irish writing holds a mirror up to Irish society. Over the years, the Abbey has nurtured and premiered the work of major Irish playwrights such as Marina Carr, Frank McGuinness, Tom Murphy and a new generation of writers such as Richard Dormer, Stacey Gregg, Nancy Harris and Elaine Murphy. We also nurture a new generation of Irish artists through our artistic development programmes and commitment to discovering new acting, writing and directing talent.

We had the opportunity to see the Abbey Theatre company in both Ann Arbor and on Broadway over the past 10-15 years and looked forward to visiting the theatre on our Dublin visit. We were not disappointed. The Theatre is a bit dated but good lobby and bar are very inviting. Acoustics in theatre were excellent and the performance of Major Barbara which we had previously seen at the Shaw Festival in Canada was excellent. If you enjoy live dramatic theatre, put this on your list. We booked the seats on the website from the states a few months prior to our visit, printed out our tickets and had no hassle when enterring the theatre.

Cozy theater. Play was very good. Building is rather plain but still a good experience. I do like that they take an intermission drink order, you prepay and just pick it up.

We went to see 'The Hanging Gardens' by Frank McGuinness last Wednesday. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The play is about dementia and how one family copes with it. The writing and the acting were superb and I felt the subject was well researched.

It is not a fully realized piece of drama, but the performance by Niall Buggy is worth the admission. We took our daughter who is studying at Trinity and she enjoyed it thoroughly. A great thing to see a new Irish play at the Abbey in the 21st century. Lady Gregory would be proud!
We shared a cocktail at intermission, which we had pre-ordered. Advise you do the same.

Very depressing theme. Dimensia turns a horrible Father into a horrendous father. Fell asleep during first half. Left at interval.
