“Couldn't Ask for More!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2009

We had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The staff was ever helpful and went out of their way to accomodate us and solve our issues, hotel-related or not. They were the well-trained staff types who are quietly there in the background and offer quiet but effective suggestions. Location: excellent. Food: excellent. Service: elegant. The hotel and room itself were stylish, funky, yet old-world elegant. I suspect this is what they were trying to achieve, and a good job they did. Stay there if you can!

we chose this hotel because we wanted something special and memorable for our honeymoon. When we were shown our room, we found the bath was badly stained and asked to be moved to another. The next room had chips in the bath, and the bathroom was unclean. The assistant manager then showed us to another room, with the same problems in the bathroom, this was starting to become embarrassing and he said this was the best he could find and he had no other rooms available. We had nowhere else to go and it was getting late, we decided to stay, and we were given two glasses of champagne, and we made arrangements that we would talk to the manager the next day. We spent the rest of our time sightseeing the fabulous Dublin, and had a wonderful time, only returning to the hotel to sleep. The manager made no attempt to contact us during our stay, we gave feedback using the hotel forms and we wrote a letter of complaint. We have had no response from the manager. We would expect better service from a 5 star hotel, and at least an acknowledgement of our complaint. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I stayed at the Clarence for seven nights in May of 2009. I am fortunate to be able to travel often and I have to say this is one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. Warm, attentive service from everyone (bellman, front desk, room service) make this hotel feel more like a private club than a hotel. Room was furnished nicely with arts & crafts style oak furniture, leather chairs, lovely bathroom, ample closet space and two huge windows. One of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in with top-notch linens. Great location, you can really walk to almost everything in Dublin. The Temple Bar area can get noisy at night but I had no problem with noise in my room. I can't wait to stay here again!

We spent several days at The Clarence after a week of touring the country. I was having trouble making reservations for the three of us on the hotel website, so I emailed reservations. Their response was immediate and very helpful. They also noted that our teenage daughter was traveling with us and upon arrival there were several gifts/specials waiting for her - very nice touch. Without exception, the staff was attentive and friendly. The rooms are stylish and comfortable. The location is excellent but note that due to the location in the Temple Bar district, it can be a bit noisy. Also, this is a hotel that dates from the mid 1800's so room size is not as large a a typical modern hotel in this class. We would certainly stay The Clarence again.

If you go, be sure to eat dinner at the Tea Room. The Market Menu is an excellent value. With our stay we received a complementary bottle of wine in the Tea Room.

The Clarence is perfect- a mix of old with warm wood tones and new with all the amenities. The staff was the most gracious I've ever encountered. Each room had white with purple and brown accents and was spacious and very clean. Perfect location nearby to Temple Bar as well as tons of restaurants and shopping. Right on the Liffey river for a perfect view.

I stayed at The Clarence with some friends on a visit during the week St. Patrick's Day festivities. We were in a 2-bedroom suite. The rooms were quite cramped and the service was average at best. The friendliest people we met were the driver that picked us up at the airport and the bartender in the Octagon bar.
If you're in Dublin to party, then Temple Bar is where you want to stay and of the hotels we visited or saw, it was definitely the nicest in the neighborhood. Amusingly, it seemed to be a tourist destination in itself since it's owned by The Edge and Bono (I think I met more people that knew the place as Bono's hotel without knowing it's actual name).
There was a bottle of very cheap Champagne awaiting us in our room (it's the thought that counts) but our room was not ready upon our arrival.
We didn't order any room service but the Octagon Bar was a nice place to start the night (even though it was closed our first night there). We had breakfast once in the restaurant which was just OK, it may have been that we were the only ones in the place.
There were a few disputes regarding charges AFTER we left the hotel which make me weary of staying there again. As most other hotels, the Clarence will pre-authorize your stay on a credit card. Well, upon check-out, they close your portfolio on whichever card you desire, however the initial pre-authorization takes 3-business days to reverse. So for a few days there, you're actually charged twice the amount.
Overall, good hotel if you're in for St. Patrick's Day or partying hard in Temple Bar. But if you're in Dublin and don't need to be in Temple Bar, I would suggest staying towards St. Stephen's Green at The Merrion.

The staff tried very hard but the young lady behind the desk struggled with some very basic tasks. The rooms were very tired and be sure to get a room that doesn't face the very noisy Temple Bar. I'd probably stay there again but not positive. I guess they bought the building next door and will be doubling the size of the hotel and at that point all the rooms will be updated...which is needed.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Clarence boasts fifty bedrooms and suites, along with our world famous Penthouse Suite. Our rooms range from Classic through Deluxe and on to our River View and Garden Terrace Suites. Our furnishings are simple: classic Shaker oak, beds dressed in cool white linen, sitting elegantly in contrast to a palate of vibrant cardinal colours, rich drapes and luxe carpets. We aim to provide all the simple needs of our guests and we offer 'round the clock room service and all rooms have complimentary WiFi as standard. Our city centre location means car space is at a premium, but we do have a small underground car park that can be reserved for a small nightly supplement. It is also worth noting that our location does mean that the area can be lively at night, especially at the weekends and while we have taken every effort to reduce noise, it is not possible to block it all out. Please do consider this before booking. Within the hotel complex there are many drinking and dining experiences, from the chilled out bliss of The Study to the super stylish Octagon Bar, the perfect spot for an afternoon cocktail or a laid back nightcap. We also have Michelin star chef Oliver Dunne's Cleaver East restaurant within our walls and we are very proud that Oliver and his team provide all catering at the hotel, so whether it's a late night bite in your room or a Full Irish breakfast the next morning, you know your food will be of the highest standard, made from the freshest produce, closely cared for by Michelin starred hands. In the bowels of our building you will find the luxurious cocktail and food bar The Liquor Rooms, home to Dublin's arts set and the first ROI bar ever to be nominated in the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. On our first floor, overlooking the River Liffey lies The Cleaver East Suite at The Clarence, which can be reserved for special occasions, from large weddings to intimate business meetings. ... more   less
