This is one place that you could spend an entire day just meandering around the gallery - some fantastic paintings and lots of Irish art - go there!

A visit to Dublin is incomplete without a visit to Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, to see some of the Hazel Lavery Bequest (1935) - a stunning collection of paintings by her husband, John Lavery from Belfast. Hazel Lavery from Chicago (1880-1935) was the pivotal person in the achievement of Irish independence from the British Empire in 1921.

A small perfect little collection of modern art. We were headed to the IMMA when we read the website that most of it was packed up and out of action so decided to visit Hugh Lane instead. So glad we did. Delightful little collection with a pleasing Renior, Pissaro or two, Monet, many Bacons, a litte group of Sean Scully works, Yeats, et al. A very detailed website is available which is great as no photography is allowed but i usually take a snap only to remind me of a detail of a work or a feelign ti gave so happy i can visit them again online.
Best part is the Bacon studio, so amazing his work came out of such a disorganised and frankly dirty atelier. It is small but perfectly preserved fragment of an artisits life.
Free but donation appreciated. Another hidden gem in Dublin.

It is a small museum with the atmosphere of a great art gallery. The painings have room to remain enjoyable. They are placed in highly interesting combinations to show development and influences of various artists. Most fascinating is the revelation, that there have been Irish impressionists that may well compete with the French ones.

What a find! The Francis Bacon studio with the film of a most informative interview with the artis in the anteroom was a revelation. Also the art exhibit is a lovely experience: a great mix of Irish and "mainstream" art on the ground floor. To me the second floor exhibit of Irish portraits was also very interesting, as I am a lover of the Irish cultural scene of the beginning of the 20th century. A great accompaniment to the Writer's museum on the same street.
