We did the free walking tour of Dublin on a cold, rainy day in December and - despite this - thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our guide, Sinead, shared great stories and I learned more about the history of Ireland on this tour than on any other activity in which we participated while in Ireland. She is incredibly knowledgeable and the tour is a great intro to the city. Sinead hung out after for some food and a beer, gave us great tips for the rest of the tour (including suggesting we drive through her country - Wicklow on our way down south), and answered our questions.
The tour guides ask for tips at the end of the tour; tips are the only way they receive compensation for their time. They let you know this at the beginning of the tour, and quite admirable, don't bring it up again throughout. Their stellar tour speaks for itself and the guide was quite gracious at the end in accepting the tips that were offered without pressuring unnecessarily.
