My sisters and I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon and evening at The Hall Green in July 2011. Jean and Mervyn were friendly and informative about the area. We did not know what to expect from such an old, historically rich home, but were pleasantly surprised at the size and charm of the bedrooms. Jean welcomed us with tea and biscuits in the sitting room and we were entertained by her lovely grandchildren who just happened to be there for a visit. They were kind enough to answer our questions and a lot of fun to listen to. Breakfast was delicious and I purchased a jar of Jean's marvelous black current jam which was enjoyed by my family when we got back to the U.S. The countryside was beautiful and we were minutes from town, where we ate supper. I wish we would have spent more than one night there, because it would have been a central location to visit a variety of places in Northern Ireland and the northwest Republic of Ireland. Thanks to Jean and Mervyn, our first trip to Ireland was extremely memborable.

Room Tip: There are several rooms to choose from - some ensuite, others not. We had a huge corner room.

We stayed at The Hall Green for 2 nights at the end of a fantastic 10 day trip across Northern and Southern Ireland and can highly recommend it as a wonderful place to enjoy a taste of 'the real Ireland'.
Jean and Mervyn were incredibly warm and welcoming hosts and we enjoyed the evenings we spent talking with them in their beautiful cozy sitting room, drinking tea and gobbling down Jean's home baked treats including some coconut-marzipan rolls that we couldn't get enough of.
Our bedroom was absolutely massive - verging on palatial - and slept like babies in the huge bed waking up only to glorious sunshine (apparently some of Ireland's best Easter weather on record!) and lovely views over their farm.
The surrounding area is fantastic for exploring an Ireland that many tourists seem to miss in their rush to get to Kerry and Galway. Derry is an easy 15 minute drive away which was a fascinating city with one of the best pubs ( Peadar O Donnels - great for traditional music!) ever plus you have the stunning coastline of Donegal with its blue flag beaches and glorious scenery all within easy reach. We can highly recommend a drive up to Malin Head and a stop off at one of the many stunning beaches for a picnic or beach barbecue.
All in all I think what we enjoyed most about The Hall Green was that it was a real home. This is the home where Jean and Mervyn have lived for years raising their children and running their farm and it makes for a very unique and special place to stay. We felt genuinely touched and privileged to be able to call it home for a few days.

My wife and I stayed there in May 2009 on our honeymoon. In fact it was the first Guest House we had listed on our itinerary.
When we arrived there we were taken aback by the beauty of the house and the surroundings.
Jean (McKean) the owner presented us with a wedding gift. Boy, were we surprised. Her husband (Meryvn) is a very knowledgeable and chatty person and a pleasure to sit down with and share a cuppa with.
Also when we arrived Jean gave us a lovely cup of tea with homemade fruit cake.
The bedroom (the Bridal suite LOL) was great. The furniture was of the period as was the mattress. It had the odd bump/lump but it was fine.
The Hall Green is a unique gem and Jean, Mervyn and family are no exception. Not forgetting "Rocky" the family pet who has a very welcoming rumbling woof! it is what you could describe as a half hearted bark.
All-in-all it was a most wonderful stay with typical Farm House hospitality from a wonderful-wonderful family.
Thank you Jean and Mervyn
We'll be back.

Walking through the doors of this historical house was like stepping back in time. Memories of being on my grandparents farm in Kansas came back to me, and I felt the warmth of home while we stayed at this magnificent and historical estate.

The McKeans have put their hearts into their home as did the families for centuries before them, and it was felt at every turn. From the well appointed bedrooms with their comfortable beds and soft blankets, to the breakfast spread fit for a king (and queen), we felt every bit like we had made the right choice! The bedrooms gave us more than adequate privacy, and we never felt hurried as sometimes experienced in a standard hotel.

I felt spoiled with details that I remained fascinated with during our visit: flowers in the garden, the McKean's sweet and gentle farm dog Rocky, the antiques carefully placed about the home, the family portraits and framed needlework, the bathroom towels and fixtures, the soft lighting and rugs...I could go on for hours!

For our trip, we chose to not stay anywhere that had the all-too typical amenities of modern, commercially-run, chain hotels. We wanted to stay with local people who had contributed to the history of the region, and knew the importance sharing their culture with travelers.

Whether visitors come through to experience their first taste of history in County Donegal, or local visitors on holiday who simply need to get away from it all, I highly recommend the Hall Green Farm for a weekend stay. Travelers of all kinds will find themselves welcome in a home that is perfectly comfortable, clean, neat, and properly loved. We will come back on our next visit to Ireland, of that I am certain!
