“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

We are just back from a weekend at the Donegal Manor. We booked a Deluxe but were given a Standard Bedroom. The room was comfortable enough but basic (no 'flat screen tv, super king or king size beds, comfortable seating' as promised on the website) but when we were paying we had a difficult conversation as the gentleman wanted to charge the higher rate, insisting the room was 'deluxe' before admitting it wasn't. Our stay had been fine up to then but this cast a real cloud on an otherwise great weekend. Next time we will stay somewhere more convenient for Donegal Town.

Thank you for viewing Donegal Manor and bringing to our attention that the description of the triple room you booked is misleading. I have immediately contacted the agent who is responsible for the information on their booking website to amend the details. We are also reviewing our check in procedure so that our guests who have booked a triple room may be offered either a room with three double beds or a room with a superking bed and a single bed.

Our guests who book a triple room have been delighted to find that we offer three double beds rather than the standard three single beds found in most hotels and guesthouses. On this occasion we accept that the room whilst it offered 3 double beds for 3 guests, a family room with a super king bed and single bed would have been more suitable for you if it had been brought to our attention soon after arrival.

As the room was occupied by three guests and booked as triple, three breakfasts were provided each morning during your stay which accounted for the difference in the price of the rooms.

We are extremely sorry for the confusion as to the description of the triple room, at check out, we classify the triple room as a deluxe for the reasons stated above. We are always extremely concerned about the comfort of our guests and will always go that extra mile when we are made aware of any issues concerning our guests..

Oct 2012 my fiance and I had the pleasure of staying at the Donegal Manor for a couple of nights and it was just wonderful. The room was very large, clean and the bed very comfy! We very much enjoyed the full Irish breakfast served in the morning before heading out to town which is only a five minute drive. Michael, his wife and their staff were always at the ready to assist us and with Marie from Gallagher Taxi at the ready, we came, we saw, we conquered LOL. Thanks Donegal Manor!! We'll be back!!

This is a very pleasant place to stay if you are visiting Donegal, and don't want to stay in the town itself. A short distance away from all the noise and activity, is this large modern stone clad house which is more like a small hotel than a B&B.

PROS

Reception area was large and cosy with comfortable sofas and a big open fire. Tea/coffee with cakes was available on arrival

Parking was more than adequate and cars were safely left overnight with no worries.

Staff are genuinely welcoming, friendly and efficient in the nicest possible way.

Rooms are clean, well furnished and comfortable

Breakfast provided delicious choices and was beautifully presented. The traditional Full Irish was only one of the many items on the menu, which also included freshly made pancakes, omelettes and various dishes of smoked fish. A lovely buffet table of delicious fruits, cereals and home made breads/cakes was also available. Service was top class and comparable with a 4* hotel.

CONS

Lack of signage outside caused most people a problem. The Manor is clearly visible from the main road but it is necessary to travel up a slip road to gain admittance. We had actually passed the premises and had to double back before we saw the side road.

The bedroom was quite cool when we arrived and took up to three hours to warm up to a comfortable temperature.

Plumbing was a little antiquated with a two tap washbasin and temperamental shower. This is dangerous for use by children, and mixer taps would be so much safer. The shower was in a high sided bath which would cause problems for short people and the frail elderly when trying to get out.

Lamps while intimate, did not throw out sufficient light for reading, applying makeup etc.

Soundproofing of rooms was absent, and revellers returning late, prevented us from enjoying a good nights sleep.

If the above problems were addressed then this establishment would deserve the full 5 marks.

Booked this place 'on the blind' on a busy weekend when accommodation was scarce, but we weren't disappointed.
The building doesn't look very inviting -- it's a plain enough large house on the outskirts of Donegal Town, but it improves inside and is very cosy and well-appointed. Rooms are large and beds are very comfortable, and breakfasts are excellent -- lots of choice and everything freshly cooked.
This is the kind of place that grows on you; after a couple of days we felt right at home and would definitley use the place again. It's friendly, clean, comfortable and has great food -- ticks all the boxes.

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to write a review of your stay with us. I am delighted that you're stay was comfortable and that you felt quite at home. After a very busy season and meeting so many kind, interesting and wonderful people we will be now concerning ourselves with the building itself and the grounds as you pointed out. The local stonework on the walls receives a lot of compliments. We are now trying to decide what colour to paint the gable walls as we would like a change from the cream walls which doesn't leave the wow factor for our guests. I am looking forward to this challenge and to the new look exterior.

An excellent and friendly establishment with large bedrooms. Thought breakfast was good with plenty to choose from, and particularly liked clean white linen tablecloths. Good location on outskirts of Donegal town, but easy access by car to surrounding countryside and coastal areas. Several good restaurants also in the area so spoilt for choice. Played golf at Donegal (Murvagh) which was in excellent condition and worth a visit.

The rooms were clean and comfortable.
Considering the nightly price we expected a very good breakfast. We were very disappointment as it tasted like it had been cooked the previous evening.

I would not recommend a stay at the Donegal Manor.

Thank you for staying with us at Donegal Manor. I am of course very concerned that your breakfast was disappointing. We pride ourselves on our freshly cooked breakfasts and indeed the selection we offer including The Manor Full Irish, vegetarian, pancakes and three fish dishes, as well as our buffet breakfast and home made breads and preserves.. I have reviewed our best practises in the kitchen since receiving your review and I am confident that each dish is cooked fresh each morning. Our breakfast reviews in the past and since are excellent, nevertheless I appreciate your comments and I am very sorry that your experience was very different to the 99% of our guests that have stayed with us.

Stayed two nights at the manor house and its an excellent base for donegal. Its a couple of miles outside Donegal town, so probably best for those who are driving. Spotlessly clean, modern and comfortable, everything worked as it should, large comfy bed, plenty of pillows, the standard room we booked, no 35, was quite spacious. If i had one minor quibble it would be that this room is directly under the roof and i imagine that on a warm day, the room could really hold the heat, which for me might be a little uncomfortable at night. However this wasnt a problem during my sept stay. If i booked again, and i probably will, i would ask for a room on the middle or ground floor. Lovely touch with unlimited free coffee and homemade cakes & traybakes in the foyer. Also lovely big log fire and comfy seats. Good choices for cooked breakfasts, traditional breakfast, fish and vegetarian - lovely wheaten bread and the nicest marmalade i have ever tasted - there is a lot of attention to detail and everything was done to a really high spec. Also the staff really chatty and friendly, we were made feel very welcome. The scenary around here is just spectacular, thank you to the member of staff who suggested we go to Slieve League along the coast, breathtaking cliffs. Also done the Waterbus Trip from Donegal, what a hoot, just like an unintended scene from Father Ted, complete with sing-song and awful cheesy jokes from the compere, brilliant ! I have stayed in a few places in Donegal over the years, last time was at the Solis Eske, but for the price this place just couldnt be beat - i would highly recommend it.
P.S... Good luck in the finals Donegal !

Thank you for staying with us at Donegal Manor and taking the time to write such a lovely review. We encourage our staff to take time to talk to our guests as for many this is their first trip to Donegal. First hand information over breakfast or in front of the fire from locals can't be beaten. Many guests who return have become great friends and we look forward to meeting you again in the future.
