Located in the heart of downtown Donegal is a well preserved castle that is worth a visit. Easily accessible and only a few minutes walk from the center of town.

Great days learning about the history of Donegal we enjoyed exploring the castle and also the lovely Donegal town.
I would suggest anyone visiting Donegal or any nearby counties spends at least half a day in the castle exploring the nooks and crannies especially if you have children.

The castle is right in the middle of the city next to the river. A bit tricky to find and no parking except in the street nearby. The tower house has been fully restored and is beautiful. Three floors with lost of information and history. The huge fireplace is beautiful with the coast of arms. The ceiling on the top floor is magnificent Beautiful wood restored with only wooden pegs to hold it together. The grounds are small and the house beside the tower is a ruin, only walls but still interesting. The Castle is right in the city center so take a walk around the city while you are there - lots of wonderful shops and the square has great charm.

The self tour is nice because you can wander at your own pace. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There was a child reading festival while we were there so we got to see the town mayor and city officials too.

My husband and I needed a small walk the day we visited Donegal Castle. It was a few blocks from our hotel and worth this walk. Experiencing Donegal's history (and the O'Donnell legacy) was so interesting. The restoration work has been nicely done, and the scale of the castle remains. We had a leisurely walk through the castle grounds and building. A bit of incongruous "decorating" included a 21st century Native American painting which to our minds just didn't belong there.
