Me and my boyfriend stayed here for two nights. We were very surprised how great the location was, only 10 minutes walking from town. Also the size of the room was a surprise, it was huge with an amazing view, exactly as the pictures shows.
The host Cyril was extremelly helpful and friendly, he gave us great ideas for travels and tips how to get around the city. Cyril was very friendly which we enjoyed.
The breakfast was delicious and we felt very satisfied afterwards.
We highly recommend Emerson House and we're looking forward to go back to Cork and have the delightful opportunity of staying again.

We had a very pleasant experience staying here. Cyril was a fantastic host and our room was terrific (it's my understanding that we had the nicest/largest room in the place so I can't speak for other rooms, but ours was great!) The breakfasts were absolutely delicious -- we loved our big Irish breakfasts.

Very odd establishment.

Stayed here as bit of a last minute extension to my trip to Cork,
I thought the rate was pretty good value for money & the location is just outside the city centre.

The website gives the impression its quite a homely guest house, great views and clearly states all rooms are en-suite.
However this is not the case, my room was quite small, musty, had a view of a run down shed and worst of all a shared bathroom.

I'm not sure how this place is being marketed but it felt incredibly seedy, with other guests being quite invasive... Desperate to engage in conversation and at one point trying to speak to me through my locked room door.

Not much can be send for the quality of sleep as it was basically non existent.
I've never experienced a pillow like it... My cheek was numb it was so hard.
In desperate need of replacing the pillows and everything else for that matter.

TV had 2 hazy channels & the wifi is not accessible from the top floor.

I wouldn't recommend this hovel to my worst enemy.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs.

Cyril's house is an old Victorian house, full of treasures, paintings, sculptures, carpets, tends, curtains, etc...
We loved our room on the second floor, the bed was very comfy.
The bathroom, although tiny, is quite OK, however could do with a refurbishment.
Cyril is a very pleasant host, and breakfast was a delight.
Last but not least, the place is within walking distance of restaurants, pubs, etc...
To be recommended!

I can't say enough good things about Cyril the owner of Emerson B&B. He is a fountain of information, freindly, and comical to boot.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, his breakfasts were fabulous. Our room was spacious with a nice view of the river. His recommendations for touring Cork were superb. We hope to be able to visit again soon.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our second floor room, there is no lift but we were helped with our luggage.

Emerson House is great. Cyril, our host, was most helpful. Sent very detailed and helpful information. In fact, we were going to keep our rental car and use it in Cork and drive to Dublin. He suggested in advance that we end the rental in Cork and take the bus to Dublin. This was great. We were able to drop off bags, drive to the airport and take the airport bus to town and it is a 10 minute walk to Emerson House. No stress. Easier to do this in Cork instead of Dublin I am certain. Cyril gives great suggestions and is entertaining and fun to visit with. Our bedroom was HUGE. Enormous really. Comfortable bed and great wifi connection. The living room was fine also. Quiet, on a side lane. No noise.
He suggested we go to Fota Arboretum and this was one of the best things we did. Easy to get to and from by train, and the station is down the hill from Emerson House. Don't miss it.

I've stayed at Emerson on a few occasions and find it consistently good.

The previous review by ALAN C seems overly critical as the vast majority of other reviewers, including myself, find Cyril a very welcoming and an informative host. "Overfiriendly and quite intrusive" are not at all how most people would describe Cyril at all.

Emerson House is an Edward-style house which is well-kept (no musty smells at all), very spacious rooms though admittedly small shower rooms. This is a feature of these older buildings. While the guesthouse could benefit from a major overhaul, this would require hugh investment mindful of planning restrictions imposed on such period homes. For now, its perfectly fine, great value for money and a personal service that you won't find in hotels downtown. It's also a good way to meet other travellers, whether travelling on your own or with others.

Most rooms have a harbour view; in the guest room, there are binoculars for you to view at habour closely and watch ship movements to/from Cobh, the last port of call for the Titanic. The guest room also has an extensive library and some "coffee table" books that re enjoyable to browse through.

Bedrooms are very spacious and all are en-siute with the exception of one room. While all rooms are TVs, the reception can be variable. If you planning to stay in one evening to watch TV, then, ask for a room with good TV reception.

Nearby, there are two establishments worth checking out:

O'Keefe's - an artisan food/deli shop with great coffee and snacks;

Henchy's - a wonderful pub where you can enjoy a pint in the bar or lounge, or have a little more privacy in one of the more privare areas at the back.

In summary, a welcoming place to stay and great value. Recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view room
