“Friendly Staff & Great Location”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The hotel had been recommended by friends and it lived up to it, very friendly staff. lovely large and clean rooms especially the ones overlooking the river with balconies, perfect for a summer evening. As previously commented on, the location is great minutes from the bus station although a taxi is nearly as cheap if there are two people. It is also minutes walk from the great bars and restaurants. The Clarion itself has an excellent choice of bar and restaurants amd excellent room service.

Room Tip: Facing the quayside.

My wife booked this hotel for the weekend for my Birthday the check in was great the rooms clean and tidy we had a meal in the hotel and it was a disaster we got seated quickly and the girl asked would we like a drink we said yes that never came I had to ask her for them twice it took an hour to get the food we had ordered when it arrived I had asked for a mild curry it was way to spicy for me I was so hungry I just ate it I asked for chips they arrived after I was finished the meal. we got over this hiccup but on Saturday night at 4am there people charging up and down the hallway so no sleep had I will not stay here ever again

Stayed at the Clarion for 4 nights over the Easter break. Hotel is 5 minute walk from the bus station at Parnell Place. We got the airport bus 226 and journey only took 20/25 mins. Ticket cost approx 8euro return. Hotel is also about 10/15 minute walk from the train station. Arrived at the hotel well over an hour before check in but only had to wait a few minutes for a room. Receptionist very helpful and welcoming. Had a double room with a double bed and a single. Good firm mattresses on both. Extra pillows also available but not needed. Good sized room with ample storage space. Only 6 hangers which for us was ok because we wore mainly jumpers but some may need more if you have dresses etc. There was also an iron and full size ironing board. Hairdryer was a pleasant surprise and not one of those weak excuses you can find at some hotels. This one had power and you didn't have to use it only in the bathroom. Room was clean and service excellent.Bathroom was also a good size with a shower over the bath. Would have preferred a walk in shower as the bath was quite steep to step in and out of. However, what was pleasing was the fact that the bath towels were a good size, unlike some you cab get at some hotels. Only downside was the lighting in the main area. Only one ceiling light unfortunately and that did not work and the other lights were lamps with tinted bulbs. It all contributed to the room being quite dim. The air con/heating worked. Over Easter it was very cold and by mistake we left the heating/air con on and it got very very warm during the night. My advice is to set before you go out and sample the Irish beers. Didn't eat breakfast at the hotel or any meals in the restaurant. However, did treat ourselves to desserts from room service. Very efficient and again friendly/polite. Be warned the malteser (yes malteser) cheesecake will need to be walked off the next day, but it's the sort of thing you should treat yourself to on holiday! The hotel bar had a musician when we were there which created a good fun atmosphere. drinks are expensive but hotel bars anywhere are and Irish pubs are in general especially for UK visitors. Have done cork now so probably won't return but if we did then we would stay again at the Clarion. There were events on for families which looked good but as we had no children with us we didn't join in. didn't want kids crying when a greedy adult wins the Easter egg hunt. Overall the hotel makes a great effort to please all types of traveller. Only complaint is that doors/walls seem quite thin and those returning very late to their rooms form a night out could be quite loud. A simple suggestion could be to put a few simple worded notices at key points just to act as a reminder to folk to consider others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river rather than the street but all ok really.

I stayed for 2 days and did city walk-about while my wife attended a conference for work. The hotel was prefect - no complaints in any department whatsoever. Well-trained friendly staff, spotless rooms, ...etc. But why choose here?? Cork is a city on a river and some of the areas on the docks, while safe, just aren't that nice for walking around. This hotel puts you right in the heart of the action - about 1 minute from Oliver Plunkett St with cool bars and eateries. I ate in the Kudos bar in the hotel itself. Reasonable prices (€7 lunch special) and good food. Go for it - book the hotel - especially if you get a deal. We got the best price directly from the hotel itself by the way. This would be worth checking out. Some rooms face the inside (photo) and others face the water. There may be a price difference at the time of booking. I wasn't too fussy to be honest. Places to go? - Well, if you want to experience some of the best micro-brew in Ireland there are two: an old chemist shop called "Mayne" has been converted into a cool bar (photo) and out back is the micro-brew (same owners for both). Also, the Franciscan Well, across the river, turn left and walk about 1km is the genuine article with brewery and pub on site. Amazing. Remember, drink alcohol responsibly!!

Room Tip: They are all pretty good but you might like a view of the river.

We spent a long weekend in the Cork Clarion in Jan 2013. 2 adults and 2 small kids (8 and 6). Very positive experience overall - lovely clean hotel and staff were so accommodating and child friendly. Never once did we feel out of place with the kids like you can in some places.

Limited choice of food - there is a restaurant in the hotel which is actually a separate business and they didn't allow kids. Bar food was nice in the hotel bar.

Very central location , easy access to Patrick Street / English Market etc

Apart from the pool which was great , there is no other activities for kids in the hotel.

I treated a friend recently for her 60th birthday and we had a superb 4 course meal for €35 pp. We were first presented with an Amuse Bouche of Gazpacho, then a selection of home made breads with 2 tasty pates. Our starter of Tempura of plaice was beautifully presented in green, white and gold. Main course of Pork Belly was tender and scrumptious and our Trio of Desserts ( a rich choc cake, sorbet and walnut meringue) was again beautifully presented and delicious. The service was excellent from beginning to end. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will be back!
