“No guided tours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

The Gaol itself was brilliant. Very well maintained and the mannequins were very real to life. I was very disappointed that there were no guided tours. There were many questions that I would have liked to ask a guide. A little tip...it is a very cold building, so wear an extra layer of clothes

“Fun in Gaol”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

The Cork City Gaol was definitely my favorite thing I did in Cork City. Walked from city center on a Saturday, so I got to see more of the city (and get some exercise in up the hills!) The Gaol itself was not crowded and made it feel like I was exploring back in time. The tour is self guided, you get a map with explanations corresponding to exhibits in the Gaol. Several cells have creepy little wax figures representing someone who stayed there or life in the gaol in general. The nice thing with it being self guided is that you can take as much time as you like to explore, check out the architecture or try to read the 1920's preserved graffiti, without someone hurrying you along. As you end the tour, there is a little gift shop, nothing too extravagant, and there is a movie that recaps some of the stories in the self guided tour and gives a more in depth history.

If you are in Cork CIty for the day walking around sight seeing, definitely add the Gaol to your tour. Beautiful, eerie, and fun!

“Fun little tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

We just decided to check this out on a whim while killing time before checking in to our B&B. Glad we did. Neat place. We did the self guided tour without the audio- we did fine on our own. A little expensive for the time it takes to go through, but I would still recommend it!

“Great Gaol for the price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014 via mobile

This place is self guided. You will be given a tour map explaining some history of the Gaol and who stayed in the cells over the years.
Is it worth the money YES.
Could it be better Hell Yes.
I did a tour of Fremantle Gaol a few years back and they had a tour guild, I would have paid more if this was offered here.
the place is full of history and could have done with someone who could fill in the blanks.
I fully recommend this place. its well laid out, well signed and the tour book is good. I just wish there had been a tour of some kind.

“Cork City Gaol”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

We had heard about the gaol previous to our trip to Ireland and decided it would be worth a visit.
As it turned out , the visit became the highlight of our 2 night stay on the island. It's difficult to walk to from the city centre as It's mostly uphill, but the 10 min taxi drive only cost us 7 Euros.
The entry fee is 8 Euros per adult with free guide book, and for additional 3 Euro, you're supplied with audio commentary via earphones (which you get to keep at the end)!
The tour itself takes around 40 mins, and is really informative. And along with the waxwork models of the prisoners and warders, you get a real atmospheric feel.
There's a gift shop attached to the wing. The staff are extremely knowledgable and friendly, and the place is well worth a visit if you're in the area.
Highly recommended.
