“good taste of a hard life.”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

A great building and gice you a good taste of what life would have been like for the prisoners. The commentary is well worth it. Some of the figures that you saw enacting the scenescould do with a bit of a clean and re-work but overall it was good.

“Locked up on holiday”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

I joked to everyone back home to keep bail money handy. Boy were they surprised when I told them I really DID go to jail! I took the self guided tour via brochure and read every wall and display. It really opened my eyes to some of the tragic history of this country, as well as the rebel south. You can even shut yourself into one of the cells, which is sobering. Bring layers as it is a bit chilly. I watched the movie at the end- I think it was 15 minutes long and found it worth it. I got quite a bit choked up by the end of it. It was worth the trek from the Bells of Shandon.

“Interesting, but not enough on display.”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

We took the guided tour inside this old jail, that was closed in the 1920s. There are a few cells where the characters are recreated and the story told relates to actual past prisoners of the Gaol. There is an audio visual, but it is a bit dated - background conversation and music played to stills projected on the building wall. The tour guide had lots to say, but the overall impression was that this wasn't such a bad place to be incarcerated! I find that hard to believe, and there was a lack of factual information - I expected more. The centre of the Gaol is used for functions, so maybe that is why there isn't much on display.

“Worth a visit, but overpriced”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

Interesting prison that seems very castle like. They have an okay self-guided tour that takes around 45 minutes, depending on how long you are. Good place to take the kids, but at 8 euro or so, overpriced for what it is.

“Cork City Gaol, more like a castle than an old jail to me”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

The location is not that far from the city centre, but it's on the hillside. So, you might prepare yourself for a short hike to the place. The Gaol itself is a terrific building, but I'm not impressed with what inside the gaol. The entrance is pretty expensive since things you can see inside are not that much. You should expect less from this place. On the bright side, you can have a nice view of Cork city from the place since it's on the hilltop :)
