“Terrific spa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2009

What sticks in my mind most from a weekend stay at the Maryborough was the terrific spa. There is a very extensive pre-treatment area, including a small multi-function swimming pool - it's worth going down to this area 30 or 45 minutes before a scheduled treatment. And there is a lovely post-treatment relaxation room, looking out through high windows on to an enclosed, but calming, space. This room has high quality adjustable loungers and is an attractive spot to lie and read the good selection of magazines. Otherwise, the hotel is comfortable rather than luxurious. Visitors who don't know Cork well should note that it is well out of the city centre.

This is a "get away from it all" hotel. My room (which was of a high standard of comfort) had a balcony which looked out onto a grove of trees. The September night I arrived at Maryborough was warm and balmy and it was pleasant just to sit outside, consume a simple dish of pasta and imbibe a couple of beers and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the place.

I also had lunch in the hotel the following day. Opted for the beef dish as a main course, which was freshly cooked and of the "melt in your mouth variety". Great selection of vegetables, cooked al dente, with all of the goodness retained in them. They also do a nice line of desserts, including an enticing raspberry Pavlova which was baked to perfection.

Though several posters have complained about the noise of weddings, I was lucky enough to stay at Maryborough on a Sunday night. So the place was characterised by a sense of serenity and calm. Though this hotel is more expensive than some of the hotels in Cork City, it's worth spending a little extra money to experience high calibre service and surroundings.

  • Liked — The peace and sylvan surroundings of the location
  • Disliked — They could upgrade the quality of their television

We booked this hotel for a relaxing weekend away. First impressions were good, the approach to the hotel is lovely as are the gardens. When we arrived our room wasn't ready (3pm). We were told it would be another 30 mins as wedding guests from the day before were late checking out. We returned an hour later but still no luck. Eventually after 2 hours waiting our room was ready. We were offered no apology but the receptionist explained that because we had booked a suite and there are only 5, that we couldn't be moved to a room that was already prepared.

The suite was in the top floor of the old house. There was no lift and it could only be reached by climbing the old stairs. This was fine for us but I felt that this should be made obvious on the hotel website as it wouldn't suit everyone. The suite was spacious with a lovely outlook over the front of the hotel. However, it was a little grubby and had a somewhat musty smell. The bathroom in particular was a big disappointment. The toilet didn't flush properly (took several attempts),as previous reviewers have mentioned there are problems with mould which could easily be fixed and in general the place needs to be cleaned and painted. I realise the aim is retain the old world charm of the place but a clean bathroom is a minimum requirement.

On a more positive note, we really enjoyed the food in the restaurant and the service there was also excellent. I would imagine we were unlucky with out choice of room and probably would have been better off in one of the new rooms.

The hotel does seem to get taken over by wedding parties. On our first night the fire alarm was set off in the small hours of the morning by some guests. Obviously this isn't the fault of the hotel but it's possibly not the best choice for a relaxing weekend away.

  • Liked — Food
  • Disliked — Grubby room. Big wedding parties.

Just returned after an amazing weekend at the Marlborough house hotel. Staff at this hotel are absolutely excellent the best i have come across anywhere, my friend and i are a little demanding and due to a very late night we turned up rather late for breakfast, however the restaurant manager made sure we had some toast, juice & much needed caffeine so cant fault him there! great bar & restaurant just a stroll away called east village, lovely lunch in el vino also a fabulous boutique called blush got some great jeans and the owner Lisa will help you to spend some of your money! our hotel room was nothing spectacular but clean and comfortable however the staff really made our weekend.

Stayed for 1 nite (a Sunday) end of August. We are Irish and likely to be repeat customers in Maryborough Cork City - however we were treated as if they would never see us again and needn't pay any attention to us. After I had advise them of my dissatisfaction things improved remarkably and we were happy with our stay. Basically we were lumped into an old room 'unrefurbished' versus the newly refurbished lovely rooms that are pictured on the website. We checked in proceeded to the room and promptly requested to be re-roomed! The Operations Manager, Scott, did acknowledge that "they put their best foot forward on the website" after I asked to be re-housed. I asked why room on the web were markedly different to where we were offered! He moved us, slightly reluctantly, to a lovely spa room, the hotel was fairly empty (Sunday night) so why they put us in a sub-standard room with lovely alternatives available baffles me. To cut a long story short.. we moved room and all was well. Room lovely, 99% of staff very very nice and helpful, service good, breakfast really great. Generally very good but ensure you ask at checkin for a nice room and challenge them when first offered a room to ensure you aren't being dumped somewhere. By coincidence our friend was staying also in separate single room that night and had EXACT same experience i.e. very unsatisfactory 1st room placement; quibble and moved to nice available room.

  • Liked — Breakfast choice
  • Disliked — Shabby room 1st offered to us before our complaint

We recently got married and had our reception at Maryborough Hotel - obviously we were treated like royalty - but all of our guests who were residents of the hotel also felt like they had entered into a tranquil sanctuary located close to the city! Everything from the cleanliness of the rooms, to the food, to the spa & pool, to the staff was incredible. Every duty was performed with a smile of the staff's face. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and were so reluctant to leave as it was truly an oasis of brilliance & luxury.

Hi All,

I just felt it was necessary to write this note to all of those thinking of the Maryborough for their wedding. My husband and I got married there in August 2008 and it was amazing.

All the staff there were a pleasure to deal with and went the extra mile for us whenever possible (and this was right from the beginning).

Thank you to Justin, Gerry & Elaine who ensured our day was memorable from the start.

The staff on the day (duty managers, waiters, receptionists, bar staff) were so professional, patient and really made our day for us.

From the moment we stepped into the hotel we knew we were in capable hands. The venue is amazing; the gardens were beautiful (all our pictures were taken there).

We really could not recommend and speak highly enough of the staff in the Maryborough.

Thank you so much
Anna
