The food and service in The Square Table is second to none. I have never before written a review but had to make an exception for this restaurant. I have been here twice, once for Sunday lunch and once for an evening meal and both times it was fantastic. It's a fine dining menu in a relaxed atmosphere at very reasonable prices. The Sunday lunch is €18 for a 2 course or €22 for a 3 course and there's also an early bird on a Friday evening (not sure about Thurs and Sat), I think it was €24 for starters and main course. Now, you might think "that's not VERY reasonable" but you will understand what I mean when you're rolling out the door afterwards.
The menu is concise but very difficult to choose from because everything is so good. There were 5 of us for Sunday lunch, we ordered 3 different dishes (1 had pork belly, 2 had chicken and 2 had hake) and there wasn't a morsel left on a plate nor a complaint to be heard. We all braved desert (2 apple and rhubarb crumbles with vanilla ice cream, 2 amazing chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and 1 strawberries with vanilla cream).
For the evening meal there were 2 of us. For starters we ordered a smoked salmon dish and a crispy egg with mushrooms and bacon. I can only describe the crispy egg as a soft boiled egg in a breadcrumb/a scotch egg without the pork??! Don't ask me how it was achieved, I still can't figure it out but it was REALLY tasty! We both had hake for main course, a fine sized fillet in a cauliflower purée with perfectly cooked veg and buttery mash potatoes. We shared a wonderful apple tart style desert and were incapable of anything but the couch.
I have yet to describe the service. Trish, the maitre d/hostess is extremely friendly and welcoming. On the Sunday we were still there when service finished and the chef, Martina, came out for a chat along with Trish. There was no hunting us out the door because they were closing. They're hard workers and honestly couldn't do enough for us. I have recommended the restaurant to everyone I know, there isn't a comparable restaurant in Cork City, it's an absolute gem and I look forward to many more delicious meals there.
