We had the pleasure of staying at the Old Ground Hotel on our last night in Ireland. We chose the hotel based on its positive reviews and its proximity to the Cliffs of Moher and the Shannon Airport. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted at the front desk and checked into our room in no time. The room was clean and well suited our needs. After getting settled in our room, we grabbed lunch at the Poet's Corner connected to the hotel. It was undoubtedly our best meal during our week long stay. The seafood was fresh, and the portions were large. Because of the friendly, attentive staff and impeccable service, we returned for dinner that evening to enjoy traditional Irish music and conversation with some local patrons.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The front desk staff were extremely hospitable and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. They secured us a taxi to take us to the airport. Our driver, Tony, was the absolute best and did a great job convincing us to plan a return trip to see additional sights of County Clare. Ennis is a lovely town and we would return to Old Ground in a heartbeat. It was a great ending to our vacation!

This was the first time I stayed in this hotel although I had been there many times over the years for a quick rest stop and a cup of tea while traveling around. The hotel has recently undergone a major facelift and it is just beautiful. My group of 24 people absolutely fell in love with this place the minute they walked in. It was a warm day and people were sitting outside at the many tables and chairs on the lovely grounds. The food was wonderful, the staff were friendly and helpful and the location makes it easy to enjoy the town. This will definitely become the hotel I stay in with my groups for the last night of every trip in the future. I was looking forward to staying here and I was not disappointed at all--quite the opposite--I love this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to give us such positive feedback. Our team made a special effort during the warm weather to ensure that the variety of fabulous food that The Old Ground is well known for was also available for guests to enjoy outside in the attractive garden and they really appreciate that you took time to mention this. We regularly advise our American Group Leaders that Ennis is a great choice either after arriving in Shannon International Airport or before they leave and we are equally well experienced in welcoming groups and individuals. We look forward to welcoming you back soon,

Best regards,

Since we had an early flight out of Shannon, we needed a hotel close to Shannon. It probably took us fifteen minutes from the hotel to the airport. This is an old hotel. Parking the car was very hard. The rooms were small, and the bathrooms even smaller. But is served the purpose and I would reconsider staying there again if the need arose.

We stayed in the Old Ground last tuesday night - a family room boys aged 13 & 15, when we came back to the room to go to bed there was a lovely treat for the boys - a glass of milk and cookies, which was a lovely gesture. We already had a lovely meal in the restaurant but the boys still managed to enjoy the milk and cookies. Apart from the milk and cookies the hotel is still as good as ever and well managed by Alan Flynn. Plenty of staff, at breakfast the following one of the ladies on breakfast will be working in the same hotel for the last 40 years (that says it all). We will be back... Ann Marie.

Room Tip: All fantastic rooms and a fantastic location.

The Old Ground Hotel was comfortable, quiet, and excellently run. At no other property that we stayed at in Europe was the staff so professional, courteous, and efficient as at the OGH in Ennis. Quite impressive.
Presumably because the buildings are old, the rooms are very large and roomy -- a refreshing and welcome change from the shoebox rooms at other ubiquitous chain hotels. The decor was tasteful and restrained, and the furnishings comfortable. The bathroom was well-equipped, roomy, and attractive (though there was one loose wall tile nominally held in place by the trash can). And do take care with the glass shower panels: ours wasn't fixed to the top of the tub and would swing outward if grasped on its edge. Probably intentional, but a bit of a surprise.
The breakfast room at OGH was a model of efficiency. They had sufficient staff working the large room to get guests seated and served with a minimum of fuss and delay. It was a delight to watch their team in action. The hot breakfast selections were varied and there seemed to be no problem with accomodating requests for variations or additions.
Even when busy, the front desk was always courteous and helpful in providing suggestions and directions for sights and restaurants. They also were good enough to frank (at our expense of course) and mail our postcards for us. The area near reception has lots of sofa and chairs for meeting with people or just sitting for a solitary read. There is an elevator between floors, though it is quite small; four people, or two people with luggage. The hallways are a bit of a labyrinth. Sometimes, the floors ramp up or down without apparent reason, but that's just part of the charm of the place. The north- and east-facing rooms don't seem to have much of a view. I suspect that the rooms with the best view are those facing south.
The OGH is located near the center of town (a fact I didn't realize when making the reservations). It can be a bit of journey to find the place the first time, and weekday traffic in the area can be a challenge. On the other hand, many very good restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance from the front door (not to mention the hotel having a restaurant and a pub of its own). It has a fairly sizeable parking lot for guests, but special events at the hotel can fill it up completely. There is street parking on the street just east of the hotel (metered during the day).

Room Tip: Some rooms have a bay window, with window seat and table, which serve handsomely if one wishes to ea...

We were flying out of Shannon so decided to spend our last night here. It couldn't have been more perfect. The location was great and proximity and ease of getting to the airport was perfect. The staff was very helpful, our room was comfortable and clean. However, our shower had no water pressure at all, and if we were staying more than one night I definitely would have asked for a different room. We ate at the Poets corner Pub and loved it.

Ate here last week and had the best monkfish I've ever tasted. To be able to sit at a bar and get food of this quality as a rare pleasure... Great spot....vibrant amd impeccably clean. There really isn't any other bar like this in Ennis.
