“Good stay at the Old Ground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

Spacious, clean rooms with a good bed all set in a historic building. Free parking and great customer service from front of house staff. Within walking distance to the main shopping, cafe, restaurant area of Ennis. We did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel but did partake in a meal and beer in the adjoining pub which was fine. Enjoyable stay and definitely would return in the future.

Only stayed one night. Rooms were good not overly big but great beds. The bathroom was recently done up with a wet room type shower which was great, breakfast was good with quick service and plenty of attention

My Mother and I stayed at the Old Ground on Thursday 4th July. The Customer Service was second to none. We received a very warm, friendly welcome when we arrived and check in was very efficient. The Rooms were nicely decorated, with king size beds, beautiful white linen and were spotless. We dined in the Town Hall, again the service was excellent as was the food. I also ordered some wine in the bar and my son asked for crisps, which they did not sell. The bar maid was so accomodating to his request, she went to the kitchen and produced a bowl of crisps for him. Breakfast in the morning was superb, a very extensive menu with all hot food cooked to order. Excellent! Check out again was very efficient, with very friendly receptionists. I would highly recommend this hotel, and I have to say is one of the best I have stayed in in Clare! Thank you!

Take a break from the tours grab a book, head to the library, find your comfy chair and order a pot of tea and some shortbread biscuits. Head down the street to Dunnes and pick up some fresh bread, cheese, and olives and pair it with your whiskey of choice or a bottle of wine that you found at the wine shop down the street and settle into the courtyard for an alfresco dining experience. Regardless of your choice the hotel staff is willing to accommodate to ensure you have an amazing experience. They handle large groups with ease -they had our room keys waiting for us. The hotel rooms are spacious and clean but mind the small elevator. The Poets Corner pub at the hotel serves some of the best pub food I have ever experienced - try the Brie Stuffed Mushrooms if you get the chance and the Town Hall serves an excellent steak and delicious fish options. The Poets Corner Pub had music on most nights however the cost of drinks was a little on the high side. Head over to the Diamond pub for a less expensive drink. Don't forget to start your day off right with breakfast - the Poach eggs on Brioche Toast with spinach and Hollandaise was delicious as was the Porridge with Crème Fraich and Honey but take note that the pancakes are more like a crepe. Great location in an incredible town!

Room Tip: Requst to be in the main portion of the hotel - I always prefer an upper level room.

We stayed at this hotel and booked a suite. The room was spacious and nicely appointed. The bed was comfortable. The only complaint is that the suite was right over the pub, which meant that like it or not we listened to the beat of the drum until it finally stopped around midnight. We were in Ireland during a particularly warm period and this is one of the few hotels that had air conditioning. You will not find a better location for your stay in Ennis and the team was very helpful with directions to the Cliffs of Mohrer.
They clearly take the time to serve a nice breakfast in a very nice setting.

Our first night was probably the worse I have ever spent in a hotel room, only for the fact it was a smoking room and it stank of very strongly of stale tobacco. In the morning my eyes were streaming and red, all my clothes stank of stale cigarette smoke as did the curtains, bed clothes carpet. My husband never complains and I mean never, but even he could not stand it. However the hotel was fully booked with two weddings so had to wait until the morning to change rooms. Rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Three place to dine, we chose the main dining room one night and this was excellent. The other two nights we dined in the town hall restaurant and this was very good, excellent service and very good choices and well executed. Breakfast was ok. I am going to base my rating on the first room, as I feel they should or checked it first and cleaned it properly.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is non smoking.

The Old Ground Hotel fits right in with the character of Ennis! It is an older hotel with many sitting rooms and unique furnishings. As you step into the lobby, you feel as though you have stepped back in time. The staff is very helpful and will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay! The rooms and bathrooms are quite large. We had a great view of the grounds and outside sitting areas. The location of the hotel was perfect...right in the middle of Ennis! It is also a short drive to the Cliffs of Mohrer and Shannon Airport. The breakfast room is lovely with fine china and white tablecloths. The servers are very attentive and the menu extensive! I can still almost taste the goat cheese stuffed mushroom. We did enjoy a few pints and laughs with other travelers in the Poets Corner. Should you visit, make sure to have an irish coffee or 2, the best I ever had! I raise my glass to Lisa Zwissler from Beach Bum Vacation for a truly remarkable vacation!
