“Loop Head area”

Just returned from a wonderful visit to this scenic area. Most days, I would start from Kilbaha pier and walk the area in all directions, photographing the hedgerows and everything else under Gods great light! Simple pleasures and long lasting memories. Most people seem to drive straight up to the many attractions, why not park the car, walk and take it all in slowly. Many options for excursions, on land and water, which give detailed knowledge of the area and highlight 'hidden places' and interesting tales! Don't forget the camera!

“Nice Drive, Beautiful Views”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

We took a drive up to the Loop Head Lighthouse. It was a fantastic and relaxing drive. Small roads through rural farms and beautiful scenery. There are very impressive cliffs around the lighthouse area. Much less traffic and fewer visitors than the Cliffs of Moher. This made it a much more enjoyable trip for us. I would recommend if you have a few hours to spare.

“Lighthouse & stunning scenery”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

on a hot summers day in July myself and my 9 & 10 yr old went for a drive out to loop head passing the Beautiful village of Kilbaha. there is so much to do in this area ..living so close you forget ! Kilkee has a very safe beach for the kids to play and swim in and then on a small drive to the Lighthouse at Loop Head . the lighthouse is interesting in terms of its history but there isnt a whole pile of exhibits in the visitors centre ...that being said myself and the boys thoroughly enjoyed it . The entrance fee is extremely cheap to be fair under 12s are free and adults are only E5 so for a guided tour it cost us only E5 !! the scenery from there was stunning and could see three counties from the top of the lighthouse . to be fair it was a glorious day weather wise and we took a picnic with us.. sitting on the edge of the world it seamed ..NB there are no catering facilities and just one wc that serves gents and ladies ..Overall well worth the trip if it is a sunny day ..i reckon it would be bleak enough on a wet / cloudy day and the scenery wouldnt be as nice either as it tends to get mist .
Stop off in Kilbaha on the way back to the Pub wich does nice food (pub type grub) and also the finely equipped childrens playground and parking area overlooking the bay. worth an afternoons visit

“irish Couple”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Vsited Loop Head Lighthouse early July 2013. Availed of the "heatwave" we are having in Irleand at the present time. We journeyed from Galway down the motorway to Ennis and then headed off to Kilrush and Kilkee etc. It is a long drive nearly 3 hours in length. As the web site stated facilities at the lighthouse are basic and one really can appreciate how the lighthouse keepers and their families lived. There is one toilet for public use and only a dispensing machine for chocolate bars. There are no tea or coffee rooms on site which is a pity. This is an issue that maybe dealt with in the coming years. Also there is a total lack of signage for the Lighthouse and the tour available.

The highlight of the tour is the trip up to the top of the lighthouse. We had a very pleasant girl Elaine and she gave us a fair bit of detail but did not overburden us. She was prepared to take photograhs of the group at the top of the tower. Cloud was a bit of an issue the day we visted but she informed us on a really clear day you can see Kerry Head, Dingle ,one of the Aran Islands , Galway and she informed us that next stop is America!!! This visit is not for anyone with a fear of hights!!

After the tour be sure to walk around to the side and back of the lighthouse. The coastal scenery isfab.Sea stacks sheercliff faces abound. You can also go to see Lovers Leap linked to the Irish Myth of Diarmuid agus Grainne. You get told all about this on the tour. You can also visit the Bridges of Ross when on your way back, third left turn after the orange house as we were told!!! There are sign posts and again wonderful scenery.

Another interesting sight is the word Eire ( Ireland) spelt out in rocks on the landscape. This was done back in 1945 to indicate to any would be invaders that this was Irish soil and we were neutral in WW2. They appeared all along the coast. Details on this are given in the exhibition in the lighthouse.

Lovely food is to be had in Keatings in Kilbaha a few kms back down the road you previously would have travelled. The day of our visit there were boat races being held and this added to the wonderful atmosphere. Keatings is a local public house and while the food was good and not overpriced, mains about 10 euro. The toilet facilities were basic and could have done with a good clean.

The lighthouse is worth a visit if you are in the Clare region, love coastal scenery and are not expecting too much in the way of mod cons. The lightghouse was only opened to the public in the last few years. It is very much a working lighthouse. We can only hope that in due course more modern facilities will be added. Enjoy if you get there!
