We live locally and have eaten here quite a few times over the years. Personally think the steaks are so good that it is a wasted opportunity to go for the burgers, chicken etc.. My wife and I were there again tonight and both had the rib-eye - 1 medium & 1 medium rare - they were both cooked to perfection. We followed up with carrot cake and cheesecake, both with ice cream. Very good however the ice cream was pretty run of the mill.

I think the biggest drawback of this place is the inability to make reservations. Whilst you can have a drink whilst waiting for your table the "waiting area" is cramped and claustrophobic. That said, for the first time ever, we got a table straight off tonight (Thursday evening).

Fantastic burgers. If you're looking for steak the main restaurant is superb but the prices are steep too. One for a really special occasion. However, the chop house does an excellent variety of fantastic burgers that pre-date some of the fancy chains now springing up in the larger cities. Highly recommended

You can't book for this place so there was a bit of a wait unfortunately the 'bar' area was very small and was already full of people so ended up standing outside the men's toilets. Luckily only had to wait 10 min as there was only two of us but people of more than two had to wait 45 min. The place is cosy alright or in real English its very tight for space. I very much doubt the decor has changed since the 1980s and the waitresses wear these ridiculous aprons that go down to their ankles. It does have a warm atmosphere but 90 percent of the customers are of pensioner age. We ordered the 2 steaks and they are really good quality and absolutely gorgeous I did feel like it was missing some sort of sauce. Huge portions but given it was £25 a steak it should've been. There wasn't enough room at the table as the two steak plates were huge and a plate of chips with condiments and drinks at the table there really wasn't any room to comfortably cut your steak. It was also uncomfortably hot.

In terms of value I didn't mind paying £25 for a steak as it was huge and very tasty but it did cost £3.65 for a small glass of orange juice and £5 for a small glass of wine. Wouldn't recommend if you are looking for value but nice for a gorgeous steak. Glancing at the rest of the menu it did cost £8 for a dessert £17 for fish and chips

Was the first visit to Chop and Ale, went with family.. 6 adults and 4 kids. Would i visit again.... mmmm wouldn't rush back as theirs other places that can offer the same service and eating exsperience. Why ? because i felt as did the rest of my family that it's over priced... yes the food is really good, the surroundings lovely but it doesn't offer a kids menu either which is not good when you have a 3 , 5 , 7 , and 10 year old in the company...... We went.. we tried... and that's it do we get the t-shirt... not if the prices are anything to go by.... But i still do think the food is good, the service too and if you don't mind paying then go try.

With my boyfriend not being from the area, I decided we had to take a trip to this restaurant. Afterall, you can't visit Linlithgow and never have a meal at Champneys! As always, you receive a nice warm welcome when you arrive and often have to go to the waiting area to wait for a table (as they don't take bookings at the chop and ale). This isnt a problem as the waiting area is very cosy and igniting and you can relax and have a blether. And you never really have to wait that long. The food was just delicious (as always) - highly recommend the T-bone steak! And my boyfriend who also loves steak, was very impressed. We will definitely return!
