Owner description: Dumbarton Castle is located in the ancient capital of Scotland and is spectacularly sited on a volcanic rock overlooking the River Clyde. Conquer more than 500 steps to stand atop one of Scotland’s greatest strongholds. The iconic Rock of the Clyde has heritage as breathtaking as its views over the Clyde, Loch Lomond and Argyll. This dramatic volcanic plug, which is Dumbarton Rock, in-filled the crater of a volcano that was active 350 million years ago. The rock is well exposed and inaccessible on all sides. Click here if you want to learn more about this fascinating geological feature. Admire great examples of 18th century Georgian military architecture and stunning views from the Tower Crag. Throughout Dumbarton Castle’s long history it has been a royal residence and a fortress, and has many fascinating connections from the Vikings to the Scottish Wars of Independence. Mary Queen of Scots sailed to France from here as a child in 1548.

“Dumbarton Castle a view not to miss”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Dumbarton castle is an excellent visit offering the history on Dumbarton rock. You also get a 360 degree panoramic view of the area.
Not suitable for everyone as there are a lot of steps to the top, but when you get there its worth the effort.
Unfortunately two of the buildings housing exhibitions were closed for repairs and upgrade.

“Dumbarton Castle”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

I live in Dumbarton. Dumbarton Castle is a part of my history. Majestic, it stands on Dumbarton Rock, a dead volcano, overlooking Dumbarton and the River Clyde. Quite a walk to go to the top, but a wonderful view if you get the chance. Mary Queen of Scots was held captive here for a few months, and now rumours are circulating that Robert The Bruce was there too! You must go if you want to see a majestic part of Scottish history.

“great views”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Not for the faint hearted if you want to climb to the top, but well worth it, as the views are amazing. Mary Queen of Scots had been here and you can share the link with history. A great place to visit
