“A must do!”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

This is a superb historical site and MUST be visited while on the Isle of Lewis. This particular Blackhouse was occupied until 1966 and has been beautifully preserved to show how life was like just 47 years ago. Be prepared to smell of peat smoke though for a few days afterwards!

“Rough living on the island.”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

Enjoyed seeing the way people lived on the island, what the houses were like and seeing Harris tweed being woven.

“Step back in time”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

This site is in the care of Historic Scotland and provides a glimpse into how generations of families lived in the Western Isles. The staff are well informed and friendly and more than happy to answer any daft question asked by city dwellers who can not understand how animal and man lived together under the one roof. The newer traditional Lewis House facing the Blackhouse provides a contrast to how life changed and is worth a visit. Good education for children and adults.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

It was fascinating to see up close the old dwellings beautifully restored. The setting along the sea was lovely.

“Lucky in the sunshine”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We were lucky to come there just before the sun came out and had a wonderful albeit short break with a view to the ocean. The houses are interesting too, but it's the complete package that makes it a great place to be.
