“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

Had a great stay here and a brilliant day at the races. Room in the "courtyard" was lovely - enormous bed and really nice toiletries. Modern, clean and comfortable. Staff both pleasant and helpful. What more can you ask? Will defintely be back. Excellent value for money.

We were welcomed on arrival by a bagpiper skirling his welcome to a newly-married couple. Magic! Being directly adjacent to Ayr racecourse the hotel has a pronounced equine leitmotif from its three horse fountain through to each room being named after a racecourse. Our room was in one of the two 'courtyard' annexes, just a few paces from the main building. It was spacious and spotlessly clean with a super size most comfortable bed and a well designed bath/shower room with quality toiletries. As the function continued in the main building, it was a big advantage to be in the quiet of the courtyard. Getting a drink at the bar required some patience as the wedding guests were already numerously in front of me.
Just a couple of quibbles - the fruit on offer at the buffet part of the breakfast was disappointingly either tinned (grapefruit segments!) or dried or of distant origin. It seemed such a shame not to be offered the fresh soft fruits for which Scotland is renowned at this, the height of the season.
On the first morning we did not receive the correct newspaper which we had pre-ordered and on the second there was no paper at all. However, overall this was a good value and comfortable stay

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are quieter.

My fiancé and I stayed here using a deal through Laterooms, a very reasonable rate and as we are getting married here in February 2014, we were upgraded to a room in the main house at no extra charge (thank you!). We had a lovely meal in the restaurant and also a complimentary dish from the Chef. Rooms were sumptuous and nice wee touches like home made biscuits and dressing gowns were lovely. Only gripe is that breakfast service was a bit on the slow side. I hope the quality service is as high on our big day!!

We stayed overnight as we were at the races.
We were in the outer buildings and found the room exceptional. I'm not sure how anyone can complain as there was everything anyone could want, from bathrobe and slippers to lovely toiletries. The room was stylish and very comfortable.
Ok the view wasn't the best but we knew that when we booked, we didn't care we weren't I. He room that much.
The staff were so accommodating nothing was too much trouble Nd everything was done with a smile.
Breakfast was excellent
I'd recommend this hotel to anyone

Attended a family wedding in April. Called ahead (as instructed by lovely staff the previous month) 2 days before to inquire if they would have a room available for my elderly Mother and i to change in, as i was coming from work and working the following day - not to mention the fact that the rooms were £135 each EXCLUDING breakfast?
'Of course, no problem' being the reply...
Anyway, after a stressful dash down and arrival at a very busy, but overstaffed and disorganised reception area- cue major stress when the far from charming senior (!) receptionist, looked me up and down- raised her eyebrow (i was in a suit and heels) then smirked and puffed that no - there were no rooms available?! Basically the air of how dare i ask such a stupid question. When i tried to explain that we had called as instructed 2 days previously - was shut down before i finished my sentence. Waved me away with her hand and stated that 'the toilets are through there' ..... Classy.
A family friend, sensing my distress - fortunately intervened and allowed us their room to change- much to the obvious annoyance of the receptionist. Hardly the service expected with this hotel. Turned into a great night. Did however decide not to have a 120 people here for a birthday event, given the disgusting attitude at front of house. Quite the 1st impression. She was STILL eyeballing me when we left that evening. Bizarre!

Dear Guest.

It is extremely disappointing to read your review. From what you describe this does not seem to be this hotel you are describing, as the wedding you were attending was three months ago can you please contact me at the hotel to confirm. As you will read from the many reviews on Tripadvisor customer service is of paramount importance to us here at Western House Hotel.

It looks like a lovely hotel from outside - and don't get me wrong, the main building is lovely. If you're lucky enough to get an upgrade into the main building (or pay for it!) you will not be disappointed - the rooms are beautiful. The chances are though you'll get one of the outside motel style rooms - still nice, but not a patch on the main house bedrooms...which is a shame, because this is where the hotel flatters to deceive..you'll go wow...and then up just a tad disappointed.
Food is good though - the menu is extensive - the breakfast is also good, but not like it was a few years back when it was incredible. I like this place - was a hotel I stayed in for several years, but the staff are a little cold and don't make you feel that special - not that I'm concerned ( I just work up here occasionally) but for a wedding reception or a romantic weekend, something like this could make a difference between a good or great night.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your review, it is very disappointing to read that you felt the staff were "cold" this is something that is one of our key objectives that the staff must be "warm, welcoming and helpful at all times" The breakfast has been reviewed and improved and I thank you for your comments.

We stayed here with our 19 month old son for two nights to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. I mentioned when booking that this was a special occasion and asked for the best room available at the rate we were paying in the main house. We stayed in room 115 the Newmarket room, the room was well appointed and spacious enough but the view from the window was very drab, we were overlooking a roof just next to the stables for the horses, probably a bit better if there was a race day on. The small fridge didn't work and we were staying during a lovely spell of weather. On our second morning breakfast was a bit of a fiasco, we arrived at 9.45am, had to wait outside until a table was prepared then we were given a high chair which was covered in food. We had to ask twice for it to be cleaned. I was poured a half cup of coffee (the jug ran out) but the waiter never returned to top it up. We eventually got our cooked breakfast at 10.25am,
40mins is a long time to keep a wee boy entertained in a dining room.
Then the icing on the cake, the breakfast was very poor, black pudding burnt on the outside but not cooked inside, sausage that was just cooked and no more.
The hotel is in a great location, lovely grounds and would be fantastic if you are going to the races. I can't help but feel that all of these small issues made our stay a disappointment.
