Having walked the 'Long Mile' both ways on a cold windy day warmth and food were needed and the first eating place I came across was The Waterfront. It was full of locals having Christmas dinners. Instantly seated in a comfortable booth overlooking the river I ordered a glass of house wine and was offered a choice of four house wines, the chosen wine was served straight away and was a good quality .The menu was good and being near Christmas there was a Christmas menu in additional to the normal one. I chose from the normal menu soup, fish pie and Eton mess. Although it was busy the service was very quick, the soup was hot and filling with fresh seeded bread and the butter was not rock hard as in so many places. The fish pie was without doubt the best I have tasted and the amount of smoked fish was just right and not overpowering. Finishing off with the Eton mess made the meal a delight. The quantities were just right in every case ( OK there was too much Eton mess but being a dessert that is allowed and it was all finished !!!) The service was superb but the most surprising thing was the bill...........just under £20
