“Best of Ayrshire”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

Customers it seems are valued here. The working proprietors run a tight ship and everyone is attentive and friendly without being intrusive. From the cosy bar (with sport discreetly showing with sound turned down on high-mounted flat screens) with real fire, to the restaurant - there is a good choice of food, wine, ales and lager. A good hard-working team delivering service with apparent ease. Highly commended.

“Uninspiring vegan options”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

First off, I do want to say hats off to The Chestnuts for actually doing a vegan menu, that itself is definitely worthy of some praise, and I thank them for making one.

However the vegan menu could do with some major improvements, it's bland and uninspiring and feels more like a 'make do' scenario than anything else.

Menu suggestions

A mixed bean and vegetable chili, served with homemade guacamole (this would also go really well with the veggie fajitas which are v. spicy, while you're at it throw in some kidney beans with the veg)

A coconut based vegetable curry, or dahl served with rice, poppadoms and chutneys/pickles

A mezze platter (e.g. flatbread, hummus, olives, sundried tomatoes) would be wonderful for lunch

Veggie Haggis, neeps and tatties (use vitalite and non-dairy milk for the mash)

A changing vegan soup (butternut squash, tomato and basil, winter vegetable, italian bean)

Vegan baked deserts (most Jus-Rol pastry is vegan, easy fruit pie, or a crumble)

Non-dairy milk for teas & coffees

“Fantastic”
Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

13 of us plus a 5yr old which was 2 more than original booking of which they were very accommodating considering how busy it was. Very attentive service drinks kept flowing. Food was just outstanding, all arrived together and piping hot. Steaks perfectly cooked and everyone in our party asked for a different cooking type.. Rare, medium to rare etc etc. fish & prawn dishes fantastic and chicken fajita delicious. Only 2 of is had pudding as others had starters and were too full. Again delicious. Can't fault this place, friendly helpful staff, food delicious and fantastic value for money. Would definitely come again and recommend to all. One of our party commented that he had eaten in many of the top restaurants around the world and this restaurant would give them all a run for their money
Thank you for a wonderful evening

Reviewed September 26, 2013

Had meal here whilst in Scotland, food and service good, We went as a party of four and we all enjoyed our meal in a nice relaxed restaurant. The service was very good regarding one of the party who was in a wheelchair. This is a lovely friendly restaurant and I will visit again if in Ayr.
