“Dissappointed!”
Reviewed November 20, 2008

Well what can I say about our stay at The Atholl Palace... Well not everything was bad as the hotel had upgraded our room on arrival as it was a special occassion so I'll give them their due there. On arrival at the room, the toilet was dirty so much so the room smelled! and there was used soap left from the last visitor. The menu's on the Internet made the food sound delicious but the Restaurant Menu was rather poor in comparison. The service was.. well just ok I suppose, although I expected more from a 4 star hotel. Some examples... on ordering dinner we asked the waiter what the soup was and his reply was " I don't know" without the offer to go and check. We then asked for a Diane sauce for our steak's but the reply was "we only have polish chef's and they won't know how to make all those fancy sauces, the hotel is only a 4 star not a 5" so need less to say we went without. The staff were pleasant enough but a certain standard was lacking. The bar closes early and we were told the fire couldn't go on as somebody had to come and clean it out first. We weren't made too welcome when we sat in the lounge after the bar closed as lights were being switched off around us and we felt like we were being sent to bed. In the spa the prices were dearer than what they were listed as in the hotel welcome guide and the treatments were disappointing as the treatment rooms were cold and the treatments didn't match up to there description. The hotel could have been cleaner and a better service would have been nice. I will say that the place is steeped in history and the grounds are lovely especially in Autumn and if your looking for 4 star prices with 2 star quality this is the place for you.

This is a fabulously historical place - it is also dignified - it is a little disfunctional in small ways - giving an endearing yet dignified charm. i have spent an excellent weekend there (2 days ago!) the food is good verging on excellent, the service is excellent (delivered by staff who are keen, but whose skills could be honed/trained into an un-assailable position). I enjoyed every minute of this place. homely, dignified, imposing, friendly, professional....... yet quirky. Room comfortable, very clean - silly small t.v. - most of a great refurbishment done. If someone could pull a few more threads together this would be a top Scottish venue which could knock some of the old faithfull campaigners into forgettableness AND hold its own internationally. The FASCINATING and UNIQUE museum in the basement tells us that a Dublin hotel consortium (5 Irish guys - according to the staff!!!) took it over a few years ago. Please, consortium (Irish guys)! keep it going and don't let it fall by the wayside.....

We stayed at the Atholl Palace hotel for a weekend and had one of their turret view suites it was just superb!! The quality in the room excellent as it was one of their more recently re-furbished rooms and the views stunning. On arrival we had afternoon tea and I must say it could have been for 4 persons sandwiches, scones and cakes with tea in the beautiful lounge area around the coal fire for 9pounds!! for 2 great value. The evening meals and breakfast were wonderful with good quality produce. The elevated position of the hotel is lovely and the grounds lovely to walk round. The spa facilities are there to be used if wanted and newly re-furbished as many of the rooms are.

Pitlochry town centre is a ten minute walk with great shopping and has a real buzz for such a small town, and for a fantastic shopping experience dont miss House of Bruar 15 minutes on from Pitlochry great for lunch too. This hotel is great for a peaceful retreat and fully reccommend to anyone staying in the Pitlochry,Perthshire area.

We stayed one night in the Edradour Turret Suite. We thoroughly enjoyed the turret suite with it's gorgeous views. We had a relaxing stay here, walking through the lovely gardens around the Atholl Palace and enjoying the pool and spa facilities. The room was spacious and clean, although we were expecting a little more grandeur. That said, it was a lovely room.
We ate three meals here, all served in the lovely restaurant overlooking the valley. The breakfast was buffet style and plenty to choose from. The lunch service was excellent, however we were disappointed with the dinner service. The food was great, although we thought it to be very expensive. The evening restaurant service was poor, we had requested prompt service as we were in a hurry, however other tables that had ordered after us received their meals first. Of the three staff we were served by, only one spoke English well enough to understand our questions. When we did receive our overpriced and tardy meals we were disappointed to find there was no vegetables, even though we had been told that the vegetables were included in the meal.
Overall it was a very pleasant stay, but next time we would make sure we allowed plenty of time for dinner, and order a side of vegetables!

Having read here some of the tales of woe, we didn't know what to expect. But from entering the hotel at reception to booking out, we were very pleased by the friendliness and helpfullness of all staff we met. (and they were not all foreign!!)
Reception changed our room from one that required stairs (need a stick to walk) to one on the first floor.
Bar staff were polite and attentive. Bar meals were excellent, served quickly and arrived hot. Breakfast had good choice of traditional cooked items and were kept freshley topped up, so the queue was kept to a minimum.
Prior to booking out, the Museum was opened early so we could look around it before leaving.
A walk around the beautiful gardens helped breakfast go down a treat.
Didnt use the spa facilities, so can't comment, but wished we had had more time to do so!

The website for the Atholl Palace is misleading!!! I stayed there in Aug 07 and was very disappointed. The building and grounds are lovely but the hotel interior is run down and dated. The meal was average and the service was poor. In the first room we were given we could not stand up in the shower due to the slanted ceiling. We asked to be moved and the second room was equally small. We settled on the third room which was a reasonable size but not what we expected given how much we had paid. On the plus side the Spa, outdoor and indoor pool were nice but again not worth the money to stay there.
