Birchwood
Ranked #15 of 17 Hotels in Pitlochry

Just returned from spending a couple of days at the Birchwood Hotel with my elderly mother. What can I say, except it was absolutely lovely!

We were met at reception by Viv who was most welcoming and after filling out the requisite forms we were shown to our room, which was large, comfortable and very clean. The attention to detail was immediately evident. Extra pillows had been provided for my mother as I'd requested when placing the booking. The room temperature had been increased as they were aware my mother was of advancing years. Towels were large and fluffy, beds extremely comfortable and everything was just perfect. The en suite was clean and the shower very hot with a good strong flow of water.

We chose to eat dinner in the hotel restaurant on the Friday evening and the food was devine. Everything is prepared fresh and cooked to order and served piping hot. The Duck dish I ordered was delicious. Although slightly pricey it is on par with all other hotels and restaurants in Pitlochry. Being situated right on the edge of town it's an easy ten minute walk to the local amenities. After spending a few hours sampling the delights of Pitlochry we retired and both of us had a wonderful nights sleep. The hotel is quiet, comfortable and warm.

Breakfast is, once again, made to order and the choice is good (I'd recommend the porridge) and the black pudding was very tasty.

The Staff are very attentive, catering for your every need, and John is a font of knowledge for the local and surrounding areas, and is a thoroughly decent and likeable chap.

I will definately visit again and I thouroughly recommend this delightful hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms are all large and comfortable. There is no street noise and all we could hear were the bir...

Ideally situated right at the edge of town the Birchwood is an attractive looking building set in its own wooded grounds. The entrance hallway is almost baronial with its illuminatated display of copper plates and its immediate old world charm.

A large and bright lounge is situated adjacent to reception which offers comfortable seating and provides the opportunity to meet and chat with other guests. The downstairs dining room is again very bright and airy looking out to the gardens and woods.

Upstairs the old baronial theme is tastefully continued and almost transports you back to visiting a country family home. Our allocated room was very large with an ample amount of room to comfortably move about. Being an old building where in the past en suite was never heard of it must prove a bit of a nightmare to owners to achieve its construction. In our room this seemed to have been managed without intruding on room space. The bathroom itself was plain but spotless and adequate for our needs. My only comment was the room decor was quite bland. The introduction of a touch of colour would have transformed its appearance.

Breakfast and evening dinner were very good. The staggering of dinner times for guests ensured the meals were individually cooked to perfection. The menu itself provided a varied selection of really good quality.

This is, as previous contributors have noted, a very laid back relaxed establishment which for people like myself who are getting on a bit is ideal. The atmosphere is helped by the quite charming hosts who were always available to attend to your whims.

Being regular visitors to Pitlochry we have stopped at a few town hotels but this has been our best experience to date. Just one note of caution to you all however. In comparison to other areas, hotels in Pitlochry seem to be pretty expensive. Don`t drive away the many foreign tourists who enjoy the town.

Room Tip: There are superior rooms but other rooms seemed good as well

John and Viv, the owners of The Birchwood, are perfect hosts. Their hotel is ideally located, very close to the centre of town. Nothing is too much trouble, everywhere is beautifully decorated and maintained, their food is good old fashioned cooking with a flair and the rooms are super comfortable. They even have a family of red squirrels who are regular visitors to their garden.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a garden view

This family run hotel is very warm and welcoming. Situated in in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. I had a very peaceful break on my drive to Aberdeen. A good nights sleep followed by an excellent breakfast.

What a personal welcome! This hotel is a cosy countryside mansion and the owners give you a warm welcome. The room had everything you need, but the best was both breakfast and dinner offered for the hotel guests.

For breakfast you chose from a menu with several options, everything served with distinction and in excellent quality. So was the four course menu for dinner with some great wines. I stayed three nights and would have loved to stay longer.

Having stayed previously in some of the bigger Pitlochry hotels (which now seem intent on pricing themselves out of the market!) it was a refreshing change to stay at the Birchwood which is competitively priced and does not charge extra for a single room. Well located just off the main road through the town but with an easy walk into the centre, the hotel was quite quiet during our stay and run by the resident proprietors. Very clean throughout although my room would have been cosier with curtains rather than a venetian blind but I still slept well. Excellent cooked breakfast. We will certainly return next year.
