Ellangowan House
Ranked #28 of 66 Pitlochry B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 30, 2010

After a visit to a 'superior' hotel earlier in the month in Inverness we decided to go for a B&B for our visit to Pitlochry. The family could not have been more welcoming and the room surpassed the hotel's in space, comfort and outlook - and was considerably cheaper. We had no car so its central location made it ideal for walking round the town and getting to and from the station with our luggage. The hearty breakfast set us up for the rest of the day. It was our first visit to Pitlochry and were were really taken by this gem set in beautiful Highland surroundings. We ate athe the Green Park which had set its cap at the grey pound which suited us! Glorious situation on the riverside, COMPULSORY sherry and a great value four-course menu. The Old Smithy was also a good place to eat. We were one of the first to arrive but you could not get a table by the time we left. The only thing that struck us as odd was that for a town that relied on visitors, the pavements were very narrow. Now that the A9 does not run through the middle of the town perhaps they could be widened? Otherwise, we would like to return and would certainly stay at Ellengowan when we do.

We were two American couples on holiday in Scotland for three weeks. Mairi greeted us warmly when we arrived and provided for all our needs. The house and garden are lovely, well-kept, and immaculate. We easily walked to the high street and to the Edradour Distillery. We ate well everywhere except the Blair Castle. We saw a play at the Festival Theater, also within easy walking distance, and we visited the Scottish Plant Hunters Garden with a terrific guide named Gordon. A day trip with the Royal Mail van to Rannoch Station was a highlight of our stay in Perthshire.
