“Very basic, semi-comfortable, good location”
Reviewed March 21, 2013 via mobile

Very basic rooms with no decor asset all, needs are bit small and rather hard. Defiantly in need of some attention. We boomed an executive double just to find it to be a bit Bugger than standard and hence emptyier as the room contents is exactly the same. I wouldn't recommend it for a comfortable stay but if you want to be in front of the train station in the morning, this is your place.

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and my husband had booked this hotel for a little romantic get away in Scotland. We booked an executive double (Room 32) which had a lovely view of the hotel Gardens.
It is clear to see that there has been investment in the hotel, although it still has some way to go, we couldn't fault it on any level and found it to represent excellent value for money.
It was a little cold but on request the lovely young girl on reception brought us an extra heater. It was a relief to see that the do not have those nasty extra prison blankets that are not very pleasant. Our room warmed up and was nice and cosy in no time.
We had dinner in the bar area, the restaurant had a large group in there and even though we were given the choice, we preferred to dine in the lovely bar which was very cosy with the candles all glowing. We ate Pate and Bruschetta to start with which were both delicious and then Poached Salmon on crushed potatoes and my husband had a steak pie which he said was very good. Great portions and the vegetables were delicious, especially the butternut squash with my salmon, nice to see something a bit more interesting than plain old brocolli! The barmaid even brought us a complimentary glass of champagne to toast our anniversary which was very kind. We both had the homemade sticky toffee for pudding...simply to die for!
We had a game of chess (playing badly) before going up to bed. I have to say that the bed was very comfortable (fantastic pillows!) and our room was exceptionally clean which is always reassuring. Plenty of hot water the following morning. Breakfast set us up for the day. I started with porridge (I requested this be made with water and it was no problem!) I then had crispy bacon and my husband had poached eggs which he said were cooked to perfection. The breakfast room was very busy but the staff were polite and even brought us our own pot of tea rather than the self service. We probably waited a little longer than normal for breakfast but we were on holiday after all so it was a good chance to relax and read the papers.
Check out was handled very well and again another helpful and polite member of staff. It would have been nice to see a local or two working but all the staff we came across could not do enough for us and always had a smile and hello.
We are looking forward to hearing about what they have on at New Year as we would love to return for another special visit.

For a basic, one or two star establishment it would be just about OK. To find anything more than that, take the nearest time machine back to the period when the last refurb of the premises was undertaken - probably late 1960/70s!
The bedroom was large, but poorly decorated, the bath had a dreadful balck drip (hopefully rust) stain, this in an "Executive Room".
Food - haggis, neeps and tatties - clearly prepared without any thought or care and served in similar vein.Being down for breakfast as the "resaturant" opened, meant it was fresh and quite good really.
Staff are pleasant, the main reason my rating isn't Terrible - but clearly in short supply.

Room Tip: There's a Great Western across the road, that could only be better.

We were celebrating a family birthday so we booked the junior suite for 1night and that was 1 night to long. The rooms were cold and in dire need or redecorating. There was cracks up the walls and roof. There was a socket of the wall. The furniture was basic flat pack. The beds were extremely uncomfortable. We were charged 27 .00 for breakfast in which the kids had fruit and yoghurt. The cooked breakfast was solid on the plate. When we checked out we were not asked by reception if we had enjoyed our stay. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Very dated decor, room very cold no extra blankets.
Requested double which was on booking form - given twin.
Real shame as it's a lovely old building but obviously they don't have the funds.
Breakfast was not bad but by that time the damage had been done.

Stayed here on a regular trip to Perth to see son at school. The hotel is old and quite frayed but extremely good value

We had a junior suite which was enormous , including two bed rooms. For 100 quid a night

As a comparison. The Park hotel is smarter but the rooms much smaller and more expensive

The salutation is one of the worst hotels I have stayed in and a rip off

So if you want value stay here and a bit of faded grandeur thrown in. If you want boutique then try the park hotel. Give the salutation a wide berth.

Room Tip: Junior suites offer great value for more than two people
