Owner description: Elcho Castle is a handsome and complete 16th century fortified mansion with three projecting towers on the banks of the River Tay. This is a castle to explore. Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. The remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife. The castle still has in place original wrought iron grilles to protect the windows. The interior is complete and roofed, with remains of decorated plasterwork.

We found this castle by accident on the banks of the Tay. It was splendid; a marvellous example of a French style castle in Scotland. Very atmospheric and with magnificent views.

Great historical viit regarding the Wemyss family. Wemyss family tasked with escorting future Queen for King Kames of Scotland and then escorting her to London when the English offered the throne of England to King James of Scotland.

As random wanderers we enjoyed this easy detour to spend over an hour mooching around this fabby 16th century tower house. With a travel-bored 10yr old, this flashback into a bygone era proved a hit and freedom to roam through lots of rooms and winding stairs helped stretch legs and minds! Well worth a visit .. the orchard and those delicious plums was an added extra! Only took us about 12 mins to be back on the A9 to head home - brilliant detour!

It was an unusual drive to find the castle as it seemed tucked behind a working farm, but it was worth the stop. Small car park but ample for when we arrived, in fact we were the only ones there for most of our visit! We loved exploring the rooms and finding staircases and passages to the roof and more. Great pictures of castle and grounds. Adults fee is 5 pounds and not part of Scotland Castle Passes.

We visited this site with 4 young adults (17/18) and we and they enjoyed looking around the castle and wondering around the grounds which were simple lawn. Well worth a visit if you are in the area but an hour or so was plenty.
