Owner description: Elcho Castle is a handsome and complete 16th century fortified mansion with three projecting towers on the banks of the River Tay. This is a castle to explore. Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. The remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife. The castle still has in place original wrought iron grilles to protect the windows. The interior is complete and roofed, with remains of decorated plasterwork.

Been a couple of times to this historic site, its well maintained and the views from the top of the castle are amazing, there are some lovely gardens / orchard to wander around as well.

Getting to it is a bit unusual as you have kind of drive through a farm to get there but that adds to the entertainment, not a lot of parking spaces but I have not had any problem parking when I have gone and there were certainly a few visitors around.

Definitely worth a visit for the history buff or just for the views, if a nice day take a picnic as a great place to have one.

A lovely place to go at any time of year and often not busy at all, take a picnic to enjoy in the grounds and buy an ice-cream on a nice day. Friendly staff. An interesting tower house with an unusually wide hall stair and every chamber has an 'en-suite'.

This is a gem and I would advise people to visit it. It is well preserved. Be prepared for lots of climbing and make sure you go up to the battlements. It was a luxury home of the time!

Very nice castle outside of Perth though a little difficult to find as you must travel along some single lane country roads to get there. It is well worth the trip as it is a pleasant visit as you will see the castle in its raw form, no furniture or finished walls just the castle.

Elcho castle is great for a day out with youngsters. Our 5 year old relative was delighted to climb round the castle using its spiral staircases and doing the quiz provided by EH, especially looking for the 9 toilets! He probably got a better impression of what life in a stone castle was like than he would from one of the many castles which are occupied and have been "modernised". No running water or electricity at Elcho Castle. The castle is essentially empty so no worries about "don't touch" either. Great views from the roof for the brave. There is no tearoom but picnic tables in the grounds make it an ideal place on a fine day. Remote location ensures that the castle is quiet and peaceful.
