Owner description: Elcho Castle is one of Scotland's best-preserved 16th-century tower houses. It was built around the time of the Protestant Reformation in 1560 by a member of the family of Wemyss of that Ilk. The family could trace their lineage back to the 12th century. A descendant of the builder of Elcho was created Lord Wemyss of Elcho in 1628 and Earl of Wemyss in 1633.

Dressing up in some period clothing and having a quiz sheet for the kids added to the enjoyment. Very well looked after with plenty of nooks and crannies to hide.

“Hidden Gem of a Castle”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

If you like old ruined castles then forget Huntingtower and head for Elcho Castle. It's not on the tourist radar so you can enjoy the experience away from the crowds. The setting is much more rural too. The only down side is that there's not enough information provided about the history. You have to go with a lot of imagination.

“Lots to explore”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Very well preserved. This castle feels as if it was built as a home. All rooms have an en-suite toilet. There are plenty of staircases to explore the castle, taking you up to the roof walkway and turret rooms. The information boards were very useful giving an insight to how the castle was used.
We only found this castle by chance, it would benefit from better advertising so others don't miss out.

“dressing up was fun”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

This is a fantastic day out for all the family. The castle itself is beautiful and so are it's surrounding gardens but the best part is that you can dress up in period costume, which I thought would only befor the kids but not so adults can drss up too if they wish. It does'nt cost anything extra to dress up and it adds to the atmosphere of the tour. Very enjoyable, we all had a ball.
