We started our trip off in Perth, picking up a Swift 6 Birth Camper. We were excited to say the least.
It was then that we noticed a few discrepancies with the camper it’s self. Don’t get me wrong, it was spacious and tidy, but we got the feeling that it hadn’t been properly tidied or clean since the last people had returned it.
First of which, was the passenger side mirror. This was taped up, like a brief repair had taken place. This made us worry, 1. Would monuvuring the camper we as easy with a dodgy mirror and 2. Had this damage been reported since the last hire (bearing in mind we paid a £500 Damage Deposit).
The second, slight worry, was the fridge. Nothing major, however there were no shelves in the door for the likes of Eggs, Milk, Bottled Water. These would have been helpful and convenient but it wasn’t a problem.
Communication was a hassle. We were asked to provide certain documents for insurance purposes and for the details of the hire. This was not a problem. The back and forth between the owner and the hassle of responses. For example, we sent an emailed the owner asking “Have you received the paper work and copies of photographic I.D?” The response we got was, “No, sorry”. This was disappointing as this didn’t feel professional and was not helpful.
There was two gas bottles available, and on the phone we were informed we’d have at least 1 full tank. We were given 1/4 of a tank. Not enough to do us our 4/5 days.
We also had a problem with the rear tail light. This had been taped also and we were worried that it was going to attract attention of the authorities or possibly stop working.
These weren’t major problems, nothing to be bothered with as we had a fantastic time with the camper on our little drive around the northern part of Scotland.
The only reason, that these small problems were mentioned in this review, was due to the final part of our trip. The return of the camper.
We dropped the camper off earlier than requested, as the only drop of points were 11am or 4pm. We dropped at around 10:30 to allow time for any paper work if necessary. This was on the Friday.
Prior to this, we cleaned the entire van from top to bottom and filled it to the brim with diesel. We left it cleaner than we found it.
We then dropped the camper off and went on our way.
We then got a phone call on Sunday morning, 2 days after dropping the camper off, to tell us that we had not filled the camper with enough fuel.
The owner said she never had enough time to fill the van which had caused an inconvenience for the hire going out on Monday. We were then deducted £8 from our deposit for the lack of diesel left in the camper.
I know it is only £8 but is more the principle. We left the van in a very clean state, and brimmed with fuel for the next hire and we were willing to over look the small issues.
To then be decucted a minimal cost for this seems a little petty.
All in all a good trip but the experience dealing with the company was inadequate and annoying. Afraid to say, I won’t be back.
This was our first Motor-home experience and the best bit was not needing to plan ahead and going a bit more with the flow, I'm not sure if it will be possible in the height of the summer but in April it was possible.
The van was good for the two adults and two children but not sure how six people would get on, we did develop better tidy skills and anti rattle strategies as the week went on. I did cook every evening for four and the fridge and freezer is huge, the gas hob was great, it all worked.
Andrea was very accommodating and let us deliver the van back on the night before (8pm) as the 10am drop off the following day was a challenge too far as the van had to be cleaned before return. It was a good experience the van was fit for purpose and Andrea gave a very personal service and made it as easy as possible to meet out time lines.
We decided to travel the NC500 in a motor home rental and after much internet searching came across Caledonian Tourers. After comparing all aspects we decided to make a booking with them and happily we feel we made a great choice.
Very helpful from the first contact up until our pick up time in Perth. Being novices we were in need of as much advice and help as possible and Andrea provided this.
Everything was explained to us at the pick up and our car was safely stored at the secure lock up for the duration of our fabulous trip..
If you are considering motor home rental to travel the NC500 look no further than Caledonian Tourers for excellent price and service.
Me and my boyfriend hired from Caledonian tourers for 6 days and couldn’t have been happier! From the beginning Andrea was so lovely and helpful.
We had never driven a motorhome and were a bit apprehensive but Andrea explained everything clearly and was available for questions when we were travelling.
The motorhome itself is lovely and spacious. It was perfect to travel the coast of beautiful Scotland :)
This is the second time we've hired the motorhome from Caledonian Tourers and would definitely recommend. The motorhome is immaculate and very easy to drive.
Andrea and Russel are very accommodating in terms of pick up and drop off times, which helps.
Great holiday, thanks again.

Massive thank you to Andrea and Russell for renting their lovely motorhome to myself and my partner. It was very clean and had everything you could possibly want or need for your trip. Communication was great and price was very reasonable. Would highly recommend this small family business to anyone wanting an enjoyable motorhome adventure!
