“An Independant run museum, managed by keen volunteers.”

Very interesting, many things to see and lots of fascinating exhibits. Fossilized footprints of dinosaurs, a Peruvian Mummy etc. I also found out about the little boy who lived as a baby in the ruins of Elgin Cathedral and returned many years later a rich and successful soldier and kind benefactor to the town.

“Very interesting with deep historical knowledge.”

This museum is small but contains a lot of information. On arrival you are greeted by one of the volunteers who gives you a quick introduction on the museum and what it holds. They are then on hand to answer any further questions.

Considering admission is free there is a lot to learn and see. You could easily spend up to two hours here and would leave very well informed on the history of the local area. Would certainly recommend a visit if you enjoy history and museums.

“A wee hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2013

A real treasure of a museum, owned and managed by The Moray Society. Originally set up as a science-based museum it houses objects of local, national and international interest. It opened in 1843 and is Scotland’s oldest independent museum.

We spent a good couple of hours looking round the interesting exhibitions and artefacts which spanned the centuries & included an example of a shrunken head, the history relating to the Romans in Moray and an area dedicated to local art to name a few.

The volunteers were very welcoming and willing to provide additional information on request. Some areas have restricted mobility due to the listed nature of the building.

The museum is free to visitors during 2013.

Well worth a look. We will definitely visit again.
