“Outstanding setting and style”

I'd seen and heard rave reviews of Cawdor's cottages for many years but was still impressed when we drove down the farm track to Achneim and opened the door on a cold January day to a warm, welcoming, stylish holiday home. The views of the Moray Firth from the windows, the endless supply of firewood, the superbly fitted out kitchen and the cosiness of this tastefully decorated property were second to none. We lit the fire, closed the curtains and cooked here every night because nowhere else could have compared. Simply perfect.

My husband, my one-year old son, and I had such a wonderful time when we stayed here for 5 days last May. It is set in the most beautiful location, amidst the many fields of the Cawdor Estate, with a view of the Moray Firth in the distance. My husband and I spent several nights in the backyard of the cottage watching the beautiful sunsets over the Firth, enjoying a glass of wine (or two...), while our son slept peacefully in his crib.

While you feel a world away from everything, you're still only a 5 minute drive from the village center (which has a lovely tavern) and about a 10 minute drive from Nairn, the closest large town (which has a few large supermarkets, a Boots pharmacy, and some great local shops/butchers). It is the perfect location from which to visit all the nearby attractions - Cawdor Castle (of course), Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, Culloden Battlefield, the Elgin cathedral, etc.

We loved the various treats and produce the hosts left for us in the hamper. And our son had so much fun exploring the front and back yard - he was just learning to walk, and was able to perfect this skill during our trip!

I learned about the 5 cottages on the Cawdor Estate from Fodor's Guide, much to my surprise, in a little blurb noted as "TIP," in thier section on Cawdor Castle. I contacted the website and also was pleased to find out that rentals for three days but less than a week were possible, so this seemed a great idea for our 4 night trip near Inverness. I am so glad we chose this option vs. a hotel in Inverness, which is an OK place, but wouldn't have been the same. At Achneim Cottage, which sleeps two in a one-bedroom, kitchen, separate living room arrangement, we had views of the Moray Firth across fields and unobstructed 360 views around the house. The cottage itself is very nice and well equipped. The kitchen, which can be closed off to hall, and to the living room, also has a separate laundry/utility room. I couldn't quite figure out the washer/dryer combo, but that was nice to have, as was a tiny dishwasher. We enjoyed the antique pine tables, and comfortable furnishings by the fireplace each night, coming back from great destinations nearby. Plan on spending plenty of time at the Cawdor Castle itself, which is magnificent and personally overseen by the Dowager Countess herself. Her presence is felt throughout and the friendly and loyal staff are happy to tell you alll about it. We made easy drives from here to Loch Ness and Urquardt Castle; Inverness, Cromarty and the Black Isle, Nairn, Brodie Castle, Culloden Moor, Clava Cairns, and a drive through Strathspey along the river. The countryside here is beautiful and our little dirt track drive from the village of Cawdor abounded with pheasants and other birds. I found dealing with Carol, the booking manager, a real pleasure as the deposit and final payments were made in advance. Directions and wealth of helpful local information are provided beforehand, and all you need to do is pick up the key. Same easy departure, as everything is included here -- utilities, firewood, linens, and a lovely welcome basket that included eggs and local products. Can't beat this, and for less than an ordinary hotel in Inverness. I join the others who signed the guestbook (some regulars) in saying we would definitely come back. Really, truly, a beautiful stay in this cottage.

Room Tip: There are 5 cottages here, plus another large guest house, on the estate. Achneim is perfect for tw...

We just spent Christmas at Achneim cottage, and it was really wonderful. We were overwhelmed with excitement when we arrived, not just because it was a perfectly formed cottage, but the estate had been kind enough to put up a tree for us, leave some Christmas goodies, and build a fire ready for us to light as soon as we arrived. As we couldn't get food otherwise, we organised a supermarket delivery that also arrived at the cottage so we were all stocked for the festive season. We saw rainbows every day, took long walks around the estate, warmed ourselves with a dram at the tavern, and made the hours drive to Loch Ness. We also visited Elgin, where the sell lots of reasonable cashmere, and have a very beautiful cathedral. There is a clay range 5 mins walk from the cottage, which we had a go at. Its seriously cheap compared to the rest of the UK, and extremely friendly - definately worth ago, even if you are new. Every moment was excellent. The cottage has everything you could need, and is remote enough to feel like you are completely away from it all, yet only 15 mins drive from the airport. It ticked all our boxes in that it had a view of the Moray Firth, and the highlands, yet we weren't able to see another building from the cottage! We barely saw other people, although there were some celebs staying in the lodge by the river whilst we were there. Walks round there are very beautiful. I think the price is top end, but I can see why, as it really is the perfect little getaway....

I have been a regular visitor to Cawdor Estate Cottages since 2005. I am sorry to say that I no longer feel that the Estate delivers the same standards that I enjoyed in my first few years. They charge a very high rental for facilities that are no longer a match to their competitors and they have unfortunately, in my two latest visits, failed to respond in a reasonable time, to problems such as a broken dishwasher. I also also encountered more wildlife than usual - particularly mice which noisily munched the bedding in the early hours! I have had many happy stays on the Estate but I won't be back because I was made to feel like I was complaining unnecessarily when in fact I was just trying to put things right.

Room Tip: Pack a mousetrap and washing up liquid!

We stayed in the Achneim Cottage on the Cawdor Estate for a few days to rest during a very busy vacation trip. With its large bedroom, comfortable living room, eat-in-kitchen, sizable bath and even a room for laundry and/or storage, this tastefully furnished little home is a bit of heaven for two in the Scottish countryside!

The cottage is set back by itself on a lane where no one can see it and you cannot see another dwelling. From the bedroom and living room, there is a wonderful view of the Moray Firth and the lovely wheatfields and trees that surround it. It is peaceful and there are wonderful walks and you might see a pheasant or two in the lane.

This cottage is self-catering (no food or bath products available but what you bring and cook/use yourself) but we were greeted with a hamper filled with delicious local goodies such as cheese, pate, various spreads, crackers/biscuits and wine that made a perfect evening snack when we arrived.

The luxurious and comfortable bed had crisp white bedding, and the spacious bedroom has a desk/vanity, reading chairs and closet with all necessary amenties (ironing board/iron, luggage rack etc.).

The fully-equipped immaculate kitchen has everything you need to prepare a home-cooked meal and there is even a small washing maching/dryer in the adjoining closet with a freezer and mini dishwasher.

The bathroom is roomy and incredibly clean with plush towels and lots of places to put your toiletries and plenty of hot water.

The delightfully decorated living room has a big, cushy couch, two small card tables, lovely working fireplace (with wood included), a TV if you must, CD player and lots of neat books.

My husband and I both travel for business and often stay in five-star hotels, and although you won't find robes and a minibar here, we'd give this cottage a five-star rating any day. Everything we needed was there - except Internet access, but since we were there for a rest, we didn't care - and there is dependable cell and smart-phone access.

Although this cottage is rustic, it fits perfectly into the 21st Century. We were exceedingly comfortable and had a wonderful rest. We will definitely stay again when we return to Scotland.

We stayed in Achniem which is a perfect, wee one bedroom honeymoon cottage. Plain and unpretentious but very comfortable with a log fire, great big bed and deep bath. After the mania of the wedding it was the perfect place to go for a very relaxing week. It sits in splendid isolation (the only person we saw was the farmer working in the next door field) surrounded by fields and trees, with lovely views over the Moray Firth.
During the days we visited Cawdor Castle, Culloden and the lesser known but equally impressive Clava Cairns. We went to Nairn and Findhorn (neither of which would merit a return visit), and we walked down through the beautiful Cawdor woods to the village (30-40 mins) which has a good wee pub with decent food and a good pint on tap.
In the evening, when we weren't sitting outside sipping champagne and watching the sunset, we were lying in front of the log fire, sipping champagne and munching our way through the basket of local goodies provided by the estate.
All in all, the most pleasant and relaxed holiday we have ever had and we'll be booking a return visit.
