“True Highland Hospitality”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Had a wonderful weekend with friends at the Golf View Hotel. We had booked a spa break which included three mini spa treatments each and dinner, bed and breakfast. It was priced very reasonably and as I had arranged it felt quite apprehensive. Once we were able to check in we were a little disappointed in the rooms, ours was very small and generally with a 4 star hotel you would get a king size bed and perhaps a fridge in the room. Our friends who had requested a double room had two single beds pushed together with separate bedding on each and sadly neither rooms had any view at all, unless you count the car park.

The staff, however, more than made up for any disappointment in the actual sleeping accommodation. We were impeccably looked after by all, from Susan (who seemed to appear anywhere you needed her at any time - we joked with her that we thought she perhaps slept under a table in the dining room), the enthusiastic and very amusing Conor and the absolutely lovely Tia in the main hotel to Catriona and Charlotte in the Spa, who could not have been more charming and helpful and tailored our time there perfectly to accommodate all of our needs.

The evening tasting menu was stunning, much more than we were expecting given the price of our package and the breakfast was excellent, just what we needed after partaking of the fine Highland hospitality the night before!

The Golf View Hotel is in a truly beautiful spot overlooking the Moray Firth and we were blessed with beautiful weather for most of the weekend which allowed us to utilise the sun patio, the outdoor hot tub and explore the grounds.

We would have absolutely no hesitation in re-visiting the Hotel and are already discussing when we might do this. Next time, though, we will request rooms with a more picturesque view.

Sunday dinner at the Golf View did not meet my expectations.
On arrival we were seated quickly by friendly staff the starters we received were very nice .Unfortunately i ordered the Roast Beef !!.It would have been helpful if i had been advised the way the chef cooks it here before i ordered.Sadly meat was rare and full of fat !!having sampled food in various establishments in Nairn the Golf View for me now doesn,t rank very high on my list .

My wife and I stayed in this hotel with another couple for a short break. We found checking in and the reception staff very pleasant and helpful. The rooms were exceptional and spacious; our friends got a sea view with a 4 poster bed which was nothing but spectacular with dolphins directly opposite the hotel.

It’s a shame the dining experience let the whole stay down. On the first night it took over three hours to be served our meals even though the restaurant was not particularly busy. The waiting staff, with a couple of exceptions, did not know what they were doing and lacked any guidance from a manager. Drinks from the bar, after the meal, was also met with shoddiness and the jug used for water was cracked and the water not refreshed - not a good sign when there are a lot of foreign visitors at the hotel and you are sampling local whiskies.

Breakfast the following day took over an hour to serve – just as well we were on holiday and not on business as you would not be in time for any appointments – goodness knows how the golfers made their tee times.

Dinner service on night two was as pathetic as the previous night as was breakfast the following morning.

We couldn’t face dinner on the third night and chose to eat in the town at a local Indian restaurant.

Breakfast on the morning of departure was greatly improved perhaps another chef was on shift.
At checkout we had extras on our bill that we hadn’t had but this was taken care of by the receptionist – who seemed the only one who knew what they were doing.

Overall we were let down by this Crerar branch especially when compared to the hotel on Mull where it is a great dining experience. Maybe the staff should be trained by the people from Mull.
The receptionist took note of our complaints but I don’t expect any action to be taken as there appears to be little or no management at this hotel.

I will need to think twice about returning to this hotel in the future which is a great shame - so much for a highland welcome.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

We had 3 nights in this nearly excellent hotel. The room was a good size and the housekeeping very good. The price paid was reasonable and the food very good indeed. However as others have said the service in the restaurant is disappointing. On one night we were there for 1 hour 50 minutes (the other 2 nights were not much better) and that was with missing out the cheese course and not having tea or coffee. The staff on duty couldn't be faulted but it was obvious that there was not enough of them and perhaps the kitchen was also short-handed. Pity about that as it let the place down.

Myself and my wife recently stayed here for 2 nights, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here, we booked the spa package which included a 6 course taster menu we both thought the food was amazing and courses came out very quickly, didn't have to wait long at all. We really enjoyed the views and spa facility's, the treatments were enjoyable and relaxing. The staff were friendly however i sometimes found myself having to find a member of staff to serve me at the bar.

Contrary to other reviews, we found the service absolutely fantastic in all areas and very accommodating for us and our 4 month baby. All the staff were really friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make this a most relaxing and comfortable short break away. Due to a wee mix up we were sent a gorgeous tray of fresh fruit, whisky, tablet and chocolates to our room and after asking if it was possible to have a different room the second night as no breeze came in through the windows and as it was such hot weather our young baby was a tad hot, our bags were moved to a gorgeous suite overlooking the sea, with a 4poster bed and Jacuzzi bath! What a fantastic treat! The lady doing the spa treatments, all of the housekeepers (especially the very lovely head housekeeper), waiting and reception staff were so welcoming and made our stay soo relaxing. The taster menu was rather fun and vegetarian options were available (as were gluten free I believe) though I 'd recommend going for dinner later in the evening . The breakfast was delicious and the eggs Florentine and cinnamon French toast were a real treat. I really couldn't praise this hotel enough. Nothing was too much hassle here. The pool was really warm and great for our son to play in each day and he loved meeting all the guest dogs on his evening stroll in his pram. The whole stay was great value as we stayed on the rejuvenation spa break which included dinner. It would be brilliant if you could maybe have the dinner menu in the front conservatory as the views are fantastic. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view are amazing!!!!! Room 7 is dual aspect and soo light! The Smaller room (room 6...

We stayed at this hotel in May 0f this year and it was excellent. Returned again this past week and it was a major disappointment,.
Reception was good and the bedroom were spotlessly clean, but the restaurant was a major let down! There was no one in charge and it took over two hours to serve the 6-course Tasting Menu. This is a menu where five of the six courses are prepared in advance and the chefs have only to cook one of three main courses available on the menu.
The second night of our stay was even worse. We gave up after 45 minutes for our first course and went out for dinner to a nearby Italian restaurant where we had fast, efficient and friendly service. We had a three course freshly prepared meal with wine and when we got back to the hotel guests were still waiting on their dinner!
There was a queue for tables at breakfast the next morning as there was insufficient staff on duty to handle the tables. Meanwhile the conservatory was set for 40 covers but no staff to service it. Their excuse was that it has never been used for breakfast despite having a superb view over the Moray Firth to the Black Isle.
It was only on the third night of our stay that a supervisor, Vicky, took charge of the dining room. We reduced our order to three of the six courses and managed to get in and out of the dining room in just over two hours!
Guests at this hotel never see any sign of the General Manager and it is definitely not suitable for families with infants, children or pets.

Room Tip: Ask for room with sea-view. There is a very slow lift available fr all floors. Make use of the ex...
