Owner description: A romantic fairy-tale castle that has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor since 1370, Cawdor has evolved into a charming family mansion and the most outstanding of stately homes. The dramatic medieval tower, dungeon, turrets, battlements and drawbridge, belie an enchanting interior of fine art, tapestries and furniture which create the warm and welcoming feel of a home rather than a museum. The castle, set in stunning grounds with three beautiful and varied gardens, is surrounded by the magnificent Cawdor Big Wood, one of the finest woodland areas in Europe, threaded with colour coded nature trails to explore.Visitors are invited to enjoy a delicious lunch or tea with home-baking from our mouth-watering menu in the courtyard café, then browse the exciting range of gifts and goodies in our three shops and, time permitting, have fun on the putting green and short 9-hole golf course which provides enjoyment for all standards.

“Lovely romp in beautiful gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2013

Family day out whilst on holiday in Moray. Very well kept, lots of interesting pieces (Dali, Stanley Spencer, Edward Lear artwork) and eccentricities around the place but with two small children in tow we didn't really get chance to look at our leisure. Staff all very helpful and welcoming especially to the kids. The contrasting old and new kitchens are wonderful and the bedrooms lovely.

The real star of the show was the gardens - so many different wee bits to explore and with the arrival of autumn, lots of opportunity for burying each other in huge piles of leaves.

Didn't try the cafe but the shop is full of the usual tartan stuff and quite a good choice of kids things too.

“Do not miss Cawdor Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

Cawdor Castle is magnificent. The Castle is still lived in by the widow of the last Thane and it shows. There are alot of personal photographs and comfortable looking furniture. The tapestry bedroom is incredible, as well as the study, and the kitchens (both new and old).

As wonderful as the Castle is, the gardens are even more impressive. They are absolutely outstanding.

To enhance your enjoyment, I would recommend reading "A Charmed Life" by Liza Campbell before you go. The author was born there and the book provides alot of background information about the castle and the Campbell family.

“A True Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

The Castle is old fairy tail with beautiful rooms. Amazing cellar with the famous tree, lovely old kitchen and a "new" one which was very smart. The rooms are filled with beautiful furniture and pictures. You really feel as you are visiting friends! This feels like a family home, not a museum! The gardens are incredible! A fantastic maze, beautiful trees and flowers everywhere....There is even a beautiful fake tree! The shop is very good and there is also a café which looked ok. We were lucky with the weather and walked around for a really long time. This is the place we liked most of all we went to! I really recommend a visit!

“the most beautiful gardens there may ever be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

for shakespeare fans, yes the site is real and amazingly better
and more charming than you can even imagine. if you are anywhere near,
absolutely do stop by. the best part is that it is lived in as a home
even more and so it doesnt have that perfect museum quality that makes
it more "real" for me. as you can tell I loved it.
