“Enjoy the scenery without crashing the car”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2013

We spent a lovely afternoon on the train, enjoying the beautiful scenery all the way from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness and back. It's a very small, slow train, which stops at every station on the way, but the 2.5 hour trip is worth it (cost £23). Because we went in the afternoon, we only had a short time to spend in Inverness, which was fine, but there was an enormous queue for the journey back. Two carriages were added to the train, but travellers to Kyle had to change to another train at Dingwall, which was a bit of a drag, because the changeover involved climbing stairs to the over-track bridge. It could have been worse, I could have been the man having to carry his bicycle!

“Great train ride”

It was comfortable, had the amenities, arrived and departed close to expected time. One has a choice of tables of 4, front and back facing views. The windows are huge, wide and tall.

“Right up with the Best.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

Made the trip from Edinburgh to Kyle on my way to Skye and what an introduction to the Isles is this wonderful railway trip. The journey prepares you perfectly for what is ahead.
Leaving Inverness and on to Dingwall the countryside is fairly pastoral but pleasant on the eye.
Past Dingwall things change rapidly as the landscape rapidly becomes rugged with hills on both sides and past Gavre pure wilderness on a grand scale. The weekend I made the trip the weather was overcast with sunny spells, perfect lighting that adds a touch of romance to the trip.
The last part of the journey is round the shores of majestic Loch Carron and the views from the glows of a sinking sun were perfectly breathtaking. You know, it is not often you sit aboard a fairly sedately moving train for about three hours and you find yourself sorry to get to your destination but this is certainly one of those memorable occasions.
If you happen to be over 55 this is an excellent time to make the journey as Scotrail will sell you a ticket for £19 return, £17 if you have a senior railcard, it is truly the bargain of the year.

“What a journey”

Really enjoyed the trip , what fantastic views. Only the train ride through the Rockies was better!

Check when booking that a coach party is not on the train, going out we were fine but coming back it was standing room only.
