“Very nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2010

We went here on our first night in Fort William. There was a wide selection of fish dishes and there was even a vegetarian and a meat dish for the non-seafood lovers. Very nice wine and the fish was excellently cooked!

“Picture perfect setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2010

This small wooden building sits on the tiny old town pier and is a perfect, quirky venue for delightful fish dishes. The views of the loch are lovely.

The service is prompt unstuffy and delivered with a smile.

I had the crab cakes starter from the specials board and they were fresh, rustick, home made and served with a lovely beure blanc.

Mains of seared seabass and plaice with smoked salmon were expertly prepared and nicely presented. The well seasoned sea bass came with wafer thin sliced fennel and a sweet puree of beetroot and was a perfect sized portion. However good the sea bass, the plaice was even better - the delicate white fillets rolled with melt in the mouth smoked salmon were complimneted with a bed of crunchy samphire and a puddle of creamed leek sauce - mmmmm.

We didn't take up the potato or vegetable accompaniments so had plenty of room for the cranachan panna cotta. Light and creamy panna cotta with a thick raspberry centre (perhaps a little too thick?) was a refreshing desert on a warm summer evening.

The walls are resplendent with the highly decorative paintings of Scotish artist Alistair Smyth adding a rich and rather beautiful back drop for the stunning scenery outside.

If you want a window seat you need to book in advance, we turned up on spec at around 6.45 and got one of the last available tables in the body of the restaurant. Not so bad as clever use of space with gaps in the partition walls affords the interior tables with a decent view. Well, untill some lucky family with a window seat decide to lower the blind??? Sheesh!

“disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2010

we picked this place through a guide book (best of scotland) and found it wanteing.

The staff were excellent, attentive and professional but of four diners only one of us said they would return. A mixture of slighty undercooked and overcooked food took the shie off. this would be fine but its one of the more expensive places and so the expectation is set quite high.

One guest felt there was an overuse of salt in the cooking.

Overall most of us felt we could do better at home and for a third of the price.

I hope this was just a one off as the location and view is great.

Thank you for your comments regarding Crannog Restaurant. We are sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy your experience with us. We take great care and attention in the sourcing of our seafood from the west coast of Scotland, and as you can appreciate, this obviously affects our pricing in order for us to be able to serve the best quality seafood. That being said, we appreciate that you felt that the produce was not cooked to our usual high standard and we can assure you that your comments have been passed directly to our chefs. We genuinely appreciate your feedback.
