Visited the Crannog Seafood Restaurant for a lunch time fix of mussels. We wee made to feel very welcome, and although we were a little late for lunch we were in no way made to feel rushed. There was a good selection on the lunch time menu - two courses for £12.95 - and although the portion size for the starter was a little on the small side, the size of the main course made up for it.

Worth a visit if you're ever in this neck of woods.

Fantastic setting on a jetty into the loch. Log fire and comfortable surroundings with very friendly helpful staff. The best was of course the food. We had a good steak, but excellent sea food, and good hot puddings to beat the weather. Big helpings that we could not finish, and we like our food!

Found the food very enjoyable, the Cullen skink was very nice and the (specials) haddock with mash, leeks and pancetta was pretty tasty. My girlfriend had the fish cakes which were not the best, a bit too much potato and not enough fish!

The menu was very pricey, but the food was very good, if anything the atmosphere was a bit bleak and the decor could do with a revamp to justify the menu prices!

Thanks for taking the time to review your experience of Crannog; it is appreciated as it’s how we continue to improve!

We were delighted to read how much you enjoyed the Cullen Skink and Haddock – thank you! We’re sorry you felt there was too much potato in your fishcakes – your feedback has been passed to our chefs for reference when they are making our fishcakes in the future.

Our chefs use the most local, freshest produce possible, and so this can affect the price of some of our dishes. This is however, why we also offer our very reasonable two course lunch for £12.95. The specials board for the lunch menu changes daily depending on the produce available, hence the reasonable price.

We were disappointed to read your thoughts on the décor and interior; we do display local artists’ paintings and we aim to keep the interior style similar to that of the building itself; and we were actually closed in November last year for refurbishment! However, your feedback has been passed to our Restaurant Manager for consideration.

Thanks again for your feedback – we do hope you’ll visit us again when you’re next in the area.

Let's get the downs out of the way first. 1. Scallops on the menu are admitted to be dredged rather than hand dived. Dredging for scallops leaves the seabed as a wasteland. Please change this policy. 2. The house is Chenin Blanc is foul! My fault for ordering it. 3. I can't believe the chef has ever eaten his own bean salad, a mountain of which sits beneath the grilled sea bass fillets.
O.K. Rant over! The good news, and there is plenty. First the fantastically good service. We were a party of 10 with 4 pretty tired kids from 5 to 10. Our waitress was nothing short of brilliant. Fast, caring and smiling. Massive thank you to her and the rest of the staff.
Picpoul de Pinet was delicious and well priced for a restaurant. Mussels were fat, juicy and delicious. Grilled sea bass was as good as I have eaten anywhere. Grilled salmon with a little fish cake was also rated good as was the venison.
I feel mean giving this restaurant only average as a score but the veg and the scallop issue tipped it from good.

Thank you for reviewing your experience of Crannog, we do appreciate our guests taking their time to share their experiences – both the ups and the downs!

We do agree that hand-dived scallops are preferable to dredged ones. Unfortunately, however, during the winter months hand-dived are almost impossible to come upon and the price for them is extortionate, rising to over £28. Moving away from serving dredged scallops though is a priority for us and we are constantly on the look out for hand-dived ones at reasonable prices – by early spring this will certainly be the case.

We’re sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy our Chenin Blanc – our house wine is specifically selected to complement most of our dishes, and so it is chosen to also suit a range of tastes. We’re delighted you enjoyed the Picoul de Pinet instead – it is certainly one of our more popular wines. Your feedback on this and the fine bean salad served with the sea bass fillets have been passed on to our restaurant manager and chefs, for them to take on board. Thank you for kind comments about the waiting staff – that is really lovely to hear, and these comments have also been passed on to our front of house team.

We do hope that if you’re back in Lochaber you’ll come and see us again.

It is seafood, after all. Generally not a bargain. We had dinner here. Spouse had grilled halibut with seafood chowder; I had sauteed monkfish with potato fondant and creamed leeks. Who knew leeks could be that good! Great bread too, and excellent, humorous service. ("What can I get you, other than soup you didn't order?" after someone tried to give us someone else's soup.) And the best view I've ever seen from a loo - right over the loch. We showed up without a reservation and thankfully a table was available, but judging by the number of people we saw turned away, I would recommend booking ahead.
