“Not too bad or £22.00 per person!”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

My family and I arrived in Fort William with nowhere to stay and so we were relieved to discover that there was availability at Ossian's at the bargain price of £22.00 each. The man at reception told us that there would be a busy and noisy disco going on that evening but realising that we were all very tired, he made sure that we were in the quietest room. As a result, we could barely hear the disco which we all really appreciated, having driven a long way.

It's not the nicest place I've ever stayed but then I didn't expect it to be, as it was cheap! But I found my bed to be very comfortable, the room warm and the shower hot. The decor was dated and some of the light switches were temperamental, but we didn't mind as we were more than happy to just relax in front of the television. Also, the man that checked us in was lovely. Really, really lovely. He was genuine, polite, kind and very helpful.

So, it might not be the most luxurious place to stay, but for £22,00, can you really complain?

OK, you get what you pay for, and I was prepared to make allowances for decor and facilities, but is a thorough cleaning of the room too much to ask? The sink was in poor shape. On the last day we discovered some very nasty and unhygenic marks on a toilet roll holder - we had missed them but so had the cleaner and for how long? A dog at breakfast? Being petted by staff handing food? Come on! Some tableclothes to cover the dining room furniture wouldn't hurt.

In short, there are better standards of 'budget friendly' accommodation. I don't expect five star facilities but a 'basic' standard means just that - and the lack of basic standards badly dragged this place down.

Room Tip: Check that the room has been cleaned, report any problems ASAP, although a result may depends on who...

The hotel (if it is possible to call it that way) is very cheap and on the main road of Fort William, directly in the center of the city.
The place is disgusting, with dirty linen, bad smell, very old and ugly toilet facilities and washbasin in the room, over the moquette (you can imagine how hygienic that can be!)
The staff is rude and there is a nightclub directly under the rooms: luckily we were there during the week, so few people went there, but in the weekend they have dancing night and it can be very loud!
I don't recommend this place at all!

I stayed in Ossian's for 2 nights in July 2012. We pretty much used it as a base for exploring the area. The room was worth the £22 per night I paid. It was basic (what do you want for £22?) The beds were comfy, the room was clean. The lady that checked us in was friendly without being over familiar, a hard one to get right I would say. I would definitely stay here again. A few minutes walk to the train station. Very central, lots of nice places to eat nearby.

Negatives

The room did smell of cooking meat, not in a nice way. The TV didn't work (I did not complain, as I wasn't really bothered) and the water in the shower was tepid at best.

But as I say, I got exactly what I expected for £22 per night and would return.

We arrived in Fort Willam on the last day of walking the WHW and Ossians was just fine for us. The room was huge and the shower was warm which is all we needed. IOn a sat night the nightclub opens up on the floor below the bedrooms so be prepared for noise - we were told about this when we booked but as residents we got in for free so if you can't beat them join them which is what we did.
Breakfast was lovely, hot and cold options and it was a wee walk down the train station which was perfect after 6 days of walking miles.
This place might not be 5star but it's a lovely wee hotel with charm and character. We would definitely stay here again - at £58 for a room plus breakfast what more can you ask for!

Look, you get what you pay for. This place is cheap, beds are clean. But, Ossians desperately needs some investment. Carpets in the bathroom? Come on. Also, due to the fact that the water in the shower leaks behind the tiles i assume they have a severe wet rot problem. Thing is, if they spent a bit a money modernising this place it could be a cool cheap hotel or hostel. As it is, they are building a travelodge across the road which could kill it.
