Attraction details
Owner description: We are a museum set in Cameron Square which is just off of the centre of Fort William High Street. We have eight rooms packed with fascinating objects, from treasure from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada galleon to the bagpipes played at Bannockburn in 1314. Whether its archaeology, natural history, warfare and weaponry, highland crofting life, costumes and charms, victorian times, silver, coins and medals, or even the history of mountain rescue, it can all be found at the West Highland Museum.

An extremely well presented and informative museum. Such a lot packed into such a small space. Well done.

“A fascinating place to visit & it's free!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013

There were so many exhibits here to see that you need more time than you think because it looks small from the outside. It's packed full of interesting stuff but you do need to go up some stairs to see everything. The staff were absolutely a delight to meet- so friendly and so helpful. We would have loved to spend more time here but our coach trip was over so fast. We really enjoyed our visit

I am glad you enjoyed your visit and yes a lot of our visitors are amazed at the size of the Museum as it does look quite small from the outside. The recently installed stairlifts have been of great benefit to those who find stairs hard.

Really informative and full of great artefacts. Lovely old building, well laid out and nicely presented. Staff very polite, welcomed us on our way in and out and explained the best way to walk round the exhibits.

“Lovely free attraction”

We really enjoyed this as a family. They had thought of kids and had steps for them to stand on to see things. Staff were lovely and it was free. Definitely worth a look.

I am glad you and your childen enjoyed your visit. We love having children in the museum and now entry is free more families visit the Museum. Donations are welcome as they help to pay the ever increasing running costs of the museum.

“excellent local museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

Perfect local museum with a lot of local colours and details - well worth supporting by visiting and donating. Two anamorphic paintings are rather amusing. Fort William is a lovely place, small and personable.

I am glad you enyoyed your visit and liked our Anamorphic paintings. The 'secret portrait' of Bonnie Prince Charlie is a device which was employed to toast the Prince and the exiled Stuarts.
It was used by supporters of the Prince after the 1745 uprising to demonstrate their continued loyalty.
