“Not the cosy family-owned feel I was hoping for...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2009

I booked this room directly over the phone with the owner who was helpful at the time. We got a quad room in one of the apartments for £100 (£25 per person). It was good because we had a key to lock our room door but we shared a bathroom (one shower and two toilets) with a total of 10 people...this doesn't work out too well when it's 8am and everyone is trying to shower to get out by the 10am check out. Also, no towels were provided and NO WHERE on the website did it mention needing to provide our own, so we had to pay 50p per towel from the owner. Also, there was no privacy in the apartment, you could hear EVERYTHING from the other rooms and the bathroom/shower. Upon arrival, the owners were not very friendly or helpful and did not make themselves seem approachable if we had further questions. The ONLY part of the stay that I liked was having a kitchen in the apartment so we could store food. Overall, I think the room we stayed in was overpriced!!! I know Fort William doesn't have infinite accommodation options but I would suggest booking early SOME PLACE ELSE. There has to be better service and a better value there!

This review on Trip Advisor is not correct. We only charge £52 for a quad room. We have the credit card receipt to prove it and have asked the guest to reply if they have evidence to the contrary. We have offered to repay the extra if they can provide that evidence. This group only shared the unit with four other guests, as we do not have any units with ten people (8 in total max). As members of VisitScotland Quality Assurance our bath/shower ratios are well within national guidelines for this style of accommodation. Our web site clearly shows that towels are not provided and can be hired. Sorry to hear they found us unfriendly. Over 95% of reviews do not say this. I have contacted these guests by email but they have yet to reply to explain these inaccuracies.

This place was nice ,a bit of a walk but cosy and comfortable, with good information about a whole independent hostel group, something i never was informed about in other hostels.
The kitchen was very much above standard and well thought out ,in fact apart from the glasgow backpackers probably the best equipt i have used. The overall standard was high.

  • Liked — high standards
  • Disliked — all was fine, the walk uphill could put off some

Thanks for your good words. We do offer a lift from town on arrival for folk with heavy bags. Being up a hill has the advantages of a decent view over the loch to the surrounding mountains! However, as you say it's not everyone's idea of fun.

Calluna is primarily a stop-over for hickers and mountain climbers as it it owned by a mountain guide and is very near the Ben Nevis. It is a self-catering facility. We were not hickers at all, and still were very well received, the room was clean, as well as the kitchen and the bathrooms. The facility also offers a very cosy sitting room, with TV and a lot of information on the area and Scotland in general. We enjoyed our stay in Calluna very much, it was quiet and the atmosphere was generally peaceful and friendly. Expect two very cute dalmatians dogs to welcome you!
Good value for your money.

Stayed here over Easter. We had the ground floor apartment for 6 people. Very good value accomadation, 2 bedrooms, 1st with 2 x single beds and 2nd with 2 bunkbeds. Comfy beds, good shower (although smelt a bit damp), large kitchen with lots of utensils (not enough drinking vessels), cheap electricity, nice and warm etc etc.

5 mins walk from Fort William so ideally placed. 5 mins drive from Ben Nevis tourist footpath. Lovely quiet location and lovely view over the Loch.

Owners are very helpful, coming in and fixing any problems immediately.

Well recommended, comfy, if a little dated accomadation.
