This is Britain's highest mountain so worth the climb. Hard to get lost In the summer as it is a well defined path. Rocky underfoot 100% of the way so hard on the feet and knees. Had lovely weather so saw some magnificent views. A lot of people use the path so it was very busy and there are far nicer walks to be had in the Highlands. Worth doing once.

Unless you desperately want to write a facebook status atop uk's highest mountain or get a significant ego boost by having conquered it, i wouldnt bother. In general, though I love hiking and am very experienced, i hate back and forth routes, like the ben nevis summit trail. For that reason i did the circular option though more demanding and long.
Climbing the very long 3 hour ascent (may be longer for the unfit) and torturing your knees back the same way on the 2 hour descent just isnt worth the very average views at the summit, and thats only if you were lucky enough to see anything at all on the 60 days a year thats possible. The circular route is far better but requires a further 300 metres climb amd a more challenging terrain and gradient, and another 2.5 hours.
So many beautiful walks around fort william..a better alternative is a chilled out walk to the beautiful waterfall at the end of glen nevis road through a beautiful gorge and valley. Lonely planet's "walking im scotland" offers longer day hikes in the area, far more rewarding than mainstream ben nevis.

I was fortunate to have beautiful weather for this Sunday hike — sun (almost too much!) and warm temperatures. The trail wasn't too crowded when I set off from the Visitors Centre but there were a few congested areas within the first hour once things started to get a bit steeper.

I wasn't in great shape and it took more 4 hours up and 3 down. The trail is a mix of rock steps, dirt and scree. There are lots of big rocks to take a quick rest on, and the summit is an incredible snow-capped plateau with the remains of a meteorological station at the top.

There are no washrooms along the trail and it's quite exposed most of the way up.

Very steep invigorating walk on well marked tracks around Cow Hill, looking out over Ben Nevis. A good walk to do if you don't have too much time

The largest hill in the UK, with good paths and great views from the top (on top of the world ma). It is there, so climb it!
