“Very outdated!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

Good Points:

Great location at the foot of Ben Nevis (closest accom).
Great breakfast - tasty & large portions (cooked breakfast).
Friendly staff.

Bad Points:

No power sockets in rooms.
Thin walls.
Overpriced Internet usage - £3 per hour.
Outdated decor.
Too many people and not enough facilities.
Bedding not ironed - unlike all other YHAs in the UK.
Overpriced pack lunches - Sandwiches do Not resemble the tasty fillings portrayed in the the dining room posters.

This YHA could be much much better - but sadly it is not.

This fairly large hostel is well run, clean and comfortable. The hostel was busy so only dorm rooms available. Women's was very quiet but men's rather full on (according to my husband). Kitchen has been recently refurbished, well equiped and very clean.

If you are looking for very remote, in the mountains, fair enough. This place may be perfect for you. However, Paying 24 pounds to sleep in a 12 person dorm is a lot in my opinion! On top of that, There are only two power outlets in the entire room. The one in mine didn't work at all, so I left my Ipod charging in the common room. Luckily, It was still there when I got back. After paying 24 pounds for the room, here is the worst part...WiFi costs 1 pound, for EVERY 20 minutes! That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! The only thing near the Hostel are an extensive little shop, and a bar/restaurant which are also very expensive. Ft. William isn't very far away, but it is far enough that you don't want to be walking back and forth all day just to buy some food. If you really want to experience the mountains and not break a budget, I suggest bringing a tent and walking right down the road to the Glen Nevis campground which is very nice, has good showers and toilets, and laundry for a fraction of the cost. I am normally pretty easy going, and it takes a lot for me to write a negative review, but I don't like places that I feel don't really care about backpackers, and only care about lining their pockets. I was staying on the Isle of Skye in super nice hostels with incredible views of the ocean for only 17 pounds a night, 24 pounds is absurd. I could get a hotel for that.

We were doing the National 3 Peaks over a weekend and this was the ideal location to start.
The start of the walk up Ben Nevis was directly opposite the hostel. As expected with a Youth Hostel the accommodation was basic but clean, the cooked breakfast was really good and the staff were very friendly and helpful - letting us back into the hostel to use the showers after our climb on a hot day (albeit for a small charge) was very welcome.
Only small criticism was the lack of a plug socket in our room - I know this helps to keep the cost down but in this day and age when almost everything needs charging, a power point would have helped and we wouldn't have minded paying extra £££ for this convenience.

We went here for the night before climbing Ben Nevis. We arrived late after hours and the staff were kind enough wait for us to get there. They were very friendly and helpful. The price was very reasonable and the rooms were big and spacious. Although the did have no power sockets in the rooms. Overall a nice place to stay for the price. You can't expect 5 star when you stay in a hostel. Great place to stay if you are climbing the mountain.

No sockets in rooms, no hairdryers, (women with wet hair everywhere), crowded rooms, narrow beds, paper thin walls, not enough showers, no TV, no single rooms. Stuck in the 1980s. Stay ruined. Within half an hour I was looking for b and b. Why can't SYHA upgrade this perfectly located hostel at the foot of Britain's most famous mountain? Location isn't everything. We expect some basic essentials.

I like the SYHA. But things in this hostel can get a bit excited & noisy.

I was woken at 4:30am by a party of 39 congregating outside for an hour or so before heading up Ben Nevis. The next night I was unable to sleep because of noise from the dinning area - an extended family holidaying on the cheap - just add alcohol and stand back. It was more like a city centre hostel. I was glad to get away.

The SYHA staff, as ever, are professional and friendly - even though their jobs (and customers) are very demanding. I do feel that they are over-worked!
