Glen Nevis Youth Hostel
Reviewed April 14, 2013

I stayed here for 2 nights with 3 mates, for our trip up Ben Nevis. The hostel is situated right at the base of the mountain, so it's as good as you're going to get it, if you're there for the climb. Is a cheap taxi ride to Fort William, for your victory pints / battered haggis afterwards.

There are various communal rooms including a kitchen to store and make your own grub, beer sold, cooked meals available to buy and decent shower facilities. The only moan I really have is the lack of sockets in the bedrooms, i.e. none at all (well at least not in our room). The alternative is to charge your phone in the corridor or behind the reception desk. The reception area also stocks a variety of things useful to climbers, in addition to beer.

I got fairly poor sleep on my second night there, but it was because there had been a lot of rain, and the river had swollen quite large, and making more noise flowing. However, it's worth it for the beautiful view you get from the window.

If I ever climb the Ben again, I would definately stay here.

This hostel is located nearly an hour's walk away from the city. For me this was quite bothersome for two reasons:

1. If you want to go to the pubs in Fort William in the evening you have to walk for quite a while and are required to use some kind of torch for most of the way.

2. Any grocery store is also located the same distance, so it means walking there and carrying all your stuff again.

On the other hand, the hostel has great access to Ben Nevis but if you don't plan to spend all or most of your time around that area there are accommodations that may be better suited for you.

The building of the youth hostel is quite old, i.e., the rooms are not that nice and especially the showering facilities are quite bleak. Well, at least there's warm water, right? :)

What's great about this place is the vast kitchen, so if you're up for some serious cooking you're ready to go. Also, the common room is quite large as well as warm and cozy, so it's a nice place to get a rest after a long day. Sadly though, at least for my stay in March, most of the crowd was 40+ so if you're younger and searching for a bit more of a common ground it's bad luck for you.

There are free-to-use computers but there's a one pound charge for 20 minutes of internet which is quite the rip-off in this modern age and day. Considering they already have the computers and the wifi-setup they should just make it free, especially, considering that you pay about 20 pounds per night for a dorm room which is not too cheap.

What a wonderful time my friends and I had! We travelled from the South for a weekend break to 'do' Ben Nevis, we booked Glen Nevis Youth Hostel because of the location, we are not of the hardened hosteller variety and were excited by the prospect of something a bit different than normal. We booked dormitory accommodation and expected both girls to be in one dorm and the two men in another as we were told they only had single sex dorms available. To our delight when we arrived we were informed as the hostel was quiet we were to be upgraded into a four bed family room, this was great as it meant we could all stay together. The hostel was spacious, the staff courteous and the kitchen was modern and clean. The only problem was the weather, it poured for the duration of our trip. We will be back in better weather to try for the top of the mountain again and will definitely be guests at this hostel!

Had one of the worst night's sleep I've ever had in this hostel. I wonder how many people have died having an accident whilst driving or climbing mountains, owing to their exhaustion after staying in this hostel. We had a room for 4 on the ground floor, facing the road. Between 11pm and gone midnight the room above was full of elephants doing acrobatics, apparently, who shook the light fittings every time they performed another stunt. Then, the fan in the bathroom made a noise all night long, even though the light was turned off and the door closed. Then at just before 7am some sort of machine or fan started off in another room adjacent to ours, and after that sleep was again impossible. We then had breakfast. The cooked breakfast is made from the lowest possible quality ingredients. Pink meat-free sausages that might have been acceptable in the 1980s. Bacon like cardboard, which was inedible. Plus points? A good drying room. The kitchen seemed good. But really, with me, if you haven't slept, then everything else is pretty irrelevant. We paid approx £30 for B&B. Why pay that in a hostel when you can pay the same to stay in a gorgeous B&B and have a top quality breakfast? The answer is: I won't, ever again, not after this experience.

Room Tip: room number 1 - a shared room for 4 on the ground floor - was appallingly noisy

The Youth hostel at Glen Nevis is easy to find, just 5 minutes drive (15 minutes walk) outside of Fort William and conveniently located opposite the start of Pony Track to the summit (also known as the Mountain Path, Tourist Route, or the Ben Path ).
The Youth Hostel consists of a large complex with men and women's sleeping dorms, cafeteria, drying room, lounge area, tuck shop and self catering kitchen. Other facilities include a payphone, leaflets and guides of the local area, maps of the glen and associated mountain ranges.
We stayed for three nights, Thursday to Sunday, and although one doesn't expect the best sleep at YHA, the first night's sleep was good. However on the Friday and Saturday large coach parties arrived causing organised chaos around the hostel way into the late hours and therefore our sleep was interrupted many times. If your looking for a quiet stay I'd recommend Monday to Thursday and avoid the weekend. If you work full time and the weekend is the only option I'd take ear plugs which many of my fellow hosteller's had foresight to pack in their kit.
The cafeteria offers standard cafe grub which has to be ordered at the front office in advance, the breakfasts are hearty and a great start for a full days walking. The cafe doesn't start serving breakfast until 07.00am so for early starters like us we cooked our own and treated ourselves to a fry up on the last day after a lay in.
We self catered for breakfasts and dinners, the kitchen is very well stocked with the latest utensils, stove tops, oven, sinks and overhead cooker hoods. In fact it's like a professional restaurant kitchen with an impressive range of facilities which enabled us to cook quickly and efficiently without too much hassle.
The lounge area is home to a large bookcase packed with hard-backed books containing glossy pictures of the mountains, the walls are decorated with well taken photos of local mountains too.
The drying room on first glance appears quite small, however a door at the rear opens out into a secondary room, with large drying racks and lines to hang all the wet gear on.
The staff were reasonably friendly and helpful, and on the occasion my friend misplaced his door access card it was kindly replaced without fuss or charge.
The dorms were warm and cosy, however the beds are made of metal and are of a fixed length so if your 6ft plus in height then you'll have to hang your feet out to the sides in order to lay flat.
The wash facilities are spacious and numerous, the shower rooms, wash basins and toilets have all been recently refurbished and were clean, tidy and well kept.
Parking is at the rear of the hostel and the car park seemed to have enough spaces for everyone. Other facilities included Wi-fi and internet access via a computer terminal in the lounge. Also a small but great selection of wine and local beers were on sale at the front desk, so no last minute trips into Fort William to get booze; they also sell chocolate bars, sweets and soft drinks.
In conclusion the Youth Hostel at Glen Nevis provides a fantastic base for walkers and climbers alike, we spent three good days climbing and walking around the local peaks including Ben Nevis. If your looking for a cheap, functional and continently located base then this ticks all the boxes. The base is well run and managed and I'd definitely use this Hostel again.

The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area and beyond. The breakfast was ordered for a particular time and was freshly cooked and generous. The self-catering kitchen is large and very well equipped, and there is also a large dining room. The dormitory slept 10 but was a large room so didn't feel crowded. Cycle storage is good and the drying room is large but can get overwhelmed if the weather has been bad.
