“Worth a stay! Great atmosphere”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Went there for two days. This seems to be one of those hostels where travel ambitions come to die - met a lot of people there who came to stay for two or three days but ended up staying for weeks and weeks, not really doing anything (cause what can you do in Fort William after a couple of days?). And it's easy to see why: The whole place is very homy and comfortable, the staff, guests and atmosphere are great, very laid back, friendly, relaxed and definitely a little crazy. Lots of interesting and open-minded people from all over the world, very easy to swap interesting travel stories here. Staff was very helpful and gave lots of tips on what to do and stuff. I'd definitely recommend going there to any backpacker between 20 and 30.

Rooms, beds and breakfast (for an extra 2 pounds, I think) were all fine, linens were included. Very few toilets and showers, however (I think three of each für 38 beds or something?) but seemed to be enough. What I did miss, though, was a locker. Apart from that, everything was great and I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

I enjoyed my stay at Fort William backpackers mainly because the small size promoted a lot of conversation between guests and and the staff were really friendly and helpful with advice about the best ways to explore the area. So friendly in fact, that on both nights I was there, the manager and the receptionist could be found by the fire pit in the backyard with the guests into the wee hours of the morning. I am a good sleeper, so was able to sleep through the noise. But if you weren't a good sleeper, it would be hard to complain to the manager about the noise they themselves were contributing to. Location is also in favour of this hostel - 8 mins up from the train/bus station.

Very central. Near shops and pubs. Supermarket and leisure centre a few minutes walk.
Friendly staff. Breakfast available for a small charge. Free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk available.
Good hot showers with towels available to hire.
My first time in a hostel so can't compare with other hostels but it was friendly and relaxed.

As it turned out, not as bad as expected. Definately a funky and very mellow vibe to the place. Most residents were about half my age, but all pretty chilled. Bunking was an interesting exerience, but the place was clean enough. Lack of showers was an issue after a good climbing day, but all in all served our group well as a base for climbing Ben Nevis, or should that be 'Summitting The Ben'. Cheap and cheerful, with tea on tap.

As soon as I walked in there was a HUGE hippy vibe to this hostel, I don't think anyone worked here over 24...

Don't get me wrong they were friendly, happy, and helpful. But personally I felt awkward.

That said the room was nice, and clean.

The toilet situation left a LOT to be desired, I found 3 toilets for the whole house, the shower room upstairs is also unisex...

Too busy getting pissed up the night before (certainly sounded like it from the dorm above the lounge) or just 'slept through the alarm'? Not for me to say but for a hostel in the mountains to leave guests waiting for someone to appear at reception so that they can leave to get into the hills was disappointing. Especially when the snow came in later that day. Didn't ask for much and didn't get it. Can only hope this was a one-off.

Great place with cool staff and great views. Looks great in the rain. Some nights can be totally off the wall with music and dancing and haggis eating contests. In the summer it can be really busy but the staff seem to deal well with this and always have a smile,
The location is nice as well with a lovely view towards the Great Glen and towards Locheil.
there is a fire pit out the back of the house which was put to great use with folk sitting around drinking and singing and generally having a time.
I would recommend this hostel to anyone who enjoys a laid back time but not to hipster party animals who cannot hold their drink!

Room Tip: 4 and 6 do not get early morning light. :)
