“Just the way it always was, no frills lunches etc”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

Something of a legend this place, folk visiting Inverness from Sutherland etc have been enjoying the castle restaurant seemingly since time began, or in my case at least since the 1960's! Menu seems pretty unchanged since those days too - excellent "home cooked type" food, large portions, quick friendly service, & general happy no-nonsense ambience. Steak pie/macaroni/mince n tatties all still excellent, the nostalgia compounded by "school dinner" type tattie scoops etc (tatties were fine) and nice puddings/sweets just like c1974, ie knickerbocker glories, apple crumble etc, all of which we enjoyed very much, then & now. Much to winge about if you're looking for a fancy romantic cosy wee place with tranquil surroundings & wine waiters etc but who needs all that when you're just seeking good plain grub quickly served. You can even watch the telly (subtitles on) & catch the excellent down to earth craic between the nice friendly staff. Only fault I found was, though not huge, I hardly fit between table & chair nowadays, however the layout has not changed & it must be dietary indiscretion on my part which has caused the problem ie steak pies etc. Im happy.

“An Inverness Institution!”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Along with another Inverness restaurant, I have been visiting here for the last 30 years; enough said. Don't miss it for down to earth friendliness and homely food.

“Good food,but rushed.”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Went for lunch here on a trip to inverness after a friend recommended I give it a try. Food was good,I had Prawn Cocktail, then Steak Pie and chips and my hubby had Broth then Liver,Onions and chips.Unfortunately no veg served with our meals, not even a few peas! But as I said what we had was good. It's a very busy wee place, and we both had the feeling we were being rushed. We only had a few minutes wait till the food was on the table, then cleared away as soon as our cutlery from starters were put on plate, then mains arrived at the most two minutes later.Everything just seemed too rushed,we just wanted to sit and have a relaxed meal so only for this reason we will probably not return. The price was average.
