Columba Hotel Inverness by Compass Hospitality

This hotel has a great location. It is situated on the river Ness facing the castle. The receptionist, who had very lovely Scottish accent, welcomed us. The room was clean with a cosy interior. We had a good rate. These are the positives. Now, the bed was very squeaky and the mattress was way too far from being new and comfortable. Walls were thin, so we could here our neighbours chatting in their room and people talking in the corridor. The bathroom was spacious, but the wallpaper fell of the wall; it was very difficult to set up the shower and there was rust around the waterspout. At the end of our vacation we had to spend one more night in Inverness but we decided to choose a different hotel.

We got a very reasonable 2 nights BB with Dinner 1st night package, so felt we had our money's worth. Would have been disappointed if we had paid rack rate. Hotel is being upgraded slowly - e.g. one side of corridor smartly re-decorated - other side peeling paint and plaster. We kept getting lost in the maze of corridors and stairs looking for the lift or dining room. On the plus side the staff was friendly, dinner and breakfasts excellent and Schallion (Ceilidh Band) great free entertainment on Saturday night.

Room Tip: Need to book a suite or superior room to have the wonderful view of the river and castle from your r...

I stayed for three nights full board. I picked it as it was close to our conference venue but was pleasantly surprised at the overall standard after reading the reviews on this site.
My only major complaint was the shaver point was not working in my room and had not been fixed when I left, despite my complaint on the first night.
The food in the restaurant was excellent and the staff were very helpful despite the occasional language problem.

This hotel received a good review from Tripadvisor but we found it over priced and poor value for money. The double room was small, had black marks and cracks on the wallpaper, the outside window ledge was filthy and the extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work. The breakfast was mediocre at best. The buffet kept running out of food, although it was eventually replaced, and there were no croissants or rolls, juts bread to make your own toast. The Palace Hotel next door gives much better value for money although it is pricier.

I've stayed at a number of hotels in Inverness in the past including the Columba. The decor in the rooms is not great but I thought I'd give it another go. The good points - the receptionist was pleasant and evening meal in Bistro and breakfast were good. What lets it down are the rooms - peeling paint in the bedroom and electric heaters which were difficult to use. Mould in grouting in bathrooms these days is just not acceptable in a house let alone a 4 star hotel. Did think of going to the supermarket and getting some cleaning poducts but thorught better of it. In short, not a 4 star hotel and there are other better ones nearby.
